High frequency chest wall compression and carbon dioxide elimination in obstructed dogs.

High frequency chest wall compression (HFCWC) was studied as a method of assisting ventilation in six spontaneously breathing anesthetized dogs. Under a constant level of anesthesia, the dogs became hypercapneic after airflow obstruction was created by metal beads inserted in the airways. HFCWC was achieved by a piston pump rapidly oscillating the pressure in a modified double blood pressure cuff wrapped around the lower thorax. Thirty minute periods of spontaneous ventilation were alternated with thirty minute periods of spontaneous breathing plus HFCWC at 3, 5 or 8 Hz. The superimposition of HFCWC to spontaneous ventilation resulted in little change in the PaO2. The PaCO2, however, was reduced in every case from a mean of 6.55 +/- 0.59 to 4.72 +/- 0.32 kPa at 3 Hz (p less than 0.05), 6.92 +/- 0.57 to 3.9 +/- 0.45 kPa at 5 Hz (p less than 0.01) and 7.10 +/- 0.65 to 4.56 +/- 0.59 kPa at 8 Hz (p less than 0.05). This occurred despite a decrease in spontaneous minute ventilation. We conclude that HFCWC can assist in elimination of CO2 in obstructed spontaneous breathing dogs with hypercapnea.

Oral gold therapy with auranofin (SK&F 39162). A multicenter open study in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

One hundred and fifty patients with rheumatoid arthritis received 6 mg of auranofin daily for 2-24 months. Thirty patients were withdrawn from the study, and 82 patients were observed for 12 months. Statistical evaluation was available for 74 patients at weeks 24, 38, and 48, respectively. The major side effects observed were diarrhea, rash, and alopecia. Significant improvement was noted in the articular index, ESR, pain, and morning stiffness.

A longitudinal study of maternal depression and preschool children's mental health.

The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine the relationship between maternal depression and preschool children's mental health in a community sample. Cohort 1 (n = 97) consisted of mothers and children followed from 2 to 3 years of age. Cohort 2 (n = 97) consisted of mothers and children followed from 3 to 4 years of age. Mothers completed a self-report measure of depression twice during 1 year. The children's day care providers/nursery school teachers completed two instruments measuring the children's social competence and behavior problems at the end of the year. Maternal depression was significantly related to lower social competence and more behavior problems in the children. Although there were no significant mean differences in children's mental health scores by gender, boys of more depressed mothers were more likely to have poorer social competence and more behavior problems than girls. Item analyses suggest that the boys' behaviors may be particularly aversive for depressed mothers, increasing the likelihood that these mothers will respond to and reinforce their sons' difficult behaviors.

[Oral freeze-dried forms of procyanidins].

Oral freeze-dried forms based on procyanidins were prepared. Effort was focused on the choice of the binder and the determination of the optimal conditions of freeze-drying.

What does the NCATS (Nursing Child Assessment Teaching Scale) measure?

The purpose of this study was to examine what aspects of the mother-child relationship are measured by the Nursing Child Assessment Teaching Scale (NCATS). A racially heterogeneous sample of 128 mothers completed questionnaires measuring maternal depression, parenting self-efficacy, knowledge of developmental and parenting principles, and perceived difficult toddler temperament. Mothers and children were also videotaped during home visits while completing two teaching tasks that were later scored using NCATS. NCATS Parent subscale scores were significantly related to maternal knowledge and education but unrelated to depression and self-efficacy. Child subscale scores were unrelated to all of the study variables, including perceived difficult temperament. Significant differences were noted among African-American, Hispanic, and white mothers. The findings suggest that the NCATS taps cognitive factors more reliably than affective factors underlying the mother-child relationship and the cognitive factors may be culturally biased.

Prenatal power--education for life.

OBJECTIVE: To expand community service opportunities in health promotion and disease prevention for approximately 20% of the female students at Boston High School, who are pregnant or parenting. METHODS: Students at Tufts University School of Medicine created, organized, and taught an interactive curriculum encompassing pre- and postnatal health at Boston High School. Evaluation of program effectiveness is provided by questionnaires completed by participating high school students, medical students, and the high school Health Services Advisor. RESULTS: Short-term outcomes will examine self-esteem, prenatal care knowledge and decision making behavior. Long-term followup will assess outcomes such as birth weight complications, educational status of parents, additional pregnancies, and child health.
