Follow-up study after more than one year including 100 patients treated for superficial mycoses.

A total of 100 patients with dermatomycoses were treated with econazole nitrate 1% or with the same compound combined with triamcinolone acetonide 0.1%. The patients were supposed to undergo clinical and mycological follow-up examinations at an average of 15 months after cure had been obtained. Of the 100 patients, 83 were followed up: 78 (95%) reported neither relapses nor reinfections; 4 (5%) presented with clinical symptoms and positive mycological examination and in 1 patient the mycological examination was positive but no clinical symptoms were present. Generally speaking, the results can be considered excellent.

Adolescent↗

Aspergillus sinusitis.

Since 1969, 79 cases of fungal maxillary sinusitis have been diagnosed. Forty-nine were due to Aspergillus fumigatus. There were no underlying diseases which depressed cellular immunity and no patient was receiving immunosuppressive drugs or corticosteroids. Most patients had received antibacterial therapy before the appearance of FMS. Treatment was by surgery, nystatin and econazole.

Aspergillosis↗

[Fungal maxillary sinusitis].

Since 1969, 600 patients suffering from maxillary sinusitis have been systematically controlled clinically as well as mycologically. We discovered 81 cases of maxillary sinusitis (13,4%). Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans were the most frequently isolated fungi. Three clinical forms could be distinguished: (1) a muco-purulent form (35 cases); (2) a budding and/or caseous form (22 cases), and (3) a pseudotumoral form (24 cases). 42 patients treated with a 1% econazol (base) solution were healed.

Aspergillosis↗

[Otomycoses].

Otomycosis is a relatively frequent disorder (21.7% of the cases of external otitis) of fungi origin. Otomycoses can be discriminated from bacterial otitis by the following symptoms: itching, absence of otalgy, discharge and negative response to different local antibiotic therapies. Our study involves 148 cases of otomycosis and their therapy. Recovery was obtained in approximately 10 days.

Anti-Bacterial Agents↗

Study of the antifungal capacity by means of the contact test.

The antifungal activity of econazole nitrate (Pevaryl) can be demonstrated by means of a new test -- called contact test -- developed by the authors. This method of assessing the fungicidal activity was tested in nine patients and found to be satisfactory.

Adult↗

[An unusual case of herpes circinata (author's transl)].

A 61-year-old patient presented with an eczematous patch on the left wrist, suspect of a contact dermatitis to his watch. This lesion did not respond to the usual topical treatment. On the contrary, new lesions appeared on both forearms. A fungous culture was positive and confirmed the diagnosis of tinea circinata. Appropriate treatment allowed a complete cure within 1 month.
