Cystic fibrosis: the effect of medium from cultured cystic fibrosis fibroblasts on ATPase activity.

Culture medium from fibroblasts of cystic fibrosis patients and controls was examined for the ability to inhibit (calcium plus magnesium)-activated ATPase and (sodium plus potassium)-activated ATPase. The ATPase systems used were both a solubilised preparation from dog-fish and a membrane associated preparation from human erythrocyes. Contrary to other reports the medium from cystic fibrosis fibroblasts did not inhibit ATPase activity.

In vivo incorporation of isotopically labelled amino acids into vertebrate proteins: L-[Me-3H]methionine incorporation into chicken egg white lysozyme.

The in vivo incorporation of L-[Me-3H]methionine into egg white lysozyme of the laying hen has been examined. Using a versatile synthetic chicken diet which consisted of 75% free amino-acid ration and 25% normal laying ration, 5-8% incorporation of the [3H]methionine into lysozyme was demonstrated. The utility of this vertebrate in vivo incorporation technique is discussed in terms of its application to the incorporation of 13C-enriched amino acids into vertebrate proteins as a prelude to macromolecular 13C nuclear magnetic resonance studies.

Treatment of cancer of the ovary.

This chapter has stressed the importance of early diagnosis in the treatment of cancer of the ovary with suggestions as to achieving this goal by a more aggressive approach to the accurate diagnosis of pelvic tumours. The combined use of surgery with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy has also been discussed with the definition of the functions of the surgeon, radiotherapist and chemotherapist. The place of surgery in the staging and initial treatment of this disease is outlined and the indications for surgery for advanced and recurrent disease are demonstrated. The use of the various modalities of ionising radiation has been outlined and the place of chemotherapy and selection of appropriate drugs are also discussed.
