[1 percent clindamycin phosphate solution versus 5 percent benzoyl peroxide gel in papulopustular acne].

In a multicenter study, 60 patients suffering from mainly moderate papulopustular acne were treated to pically either with 1% clindamycin phosphate in alcoholic solution or with 5% benzoyl peroxide gel, 30 patients each. During the treatment period of 9 weeks, clinical controls with lesion counts were performed every 3 weeks and after a 3 weeks follow-up. The therapeutic efficacy according to the reduction of papules and pustules was 72% in the benzoyl peroxide group and 73% in the clindamycin group, the latter showing significantly less side effects. On account of its good therapeutic results, we consider topical treatment with clindamycin phosphate an important alternative to systemic antibiotic or topical benzoyl peroxide therapy in acne.

Acne Vulgaris

[Miconazole-benzoyl peroxide: a new combination for extending the topical therapy of acne].

In a randomized double blind study on acne the efficacy and tolerance of a combination preparation of benzoyl peroxide and miconazole as a cream formulation was compared with those of benzoyl peroxide and oral tetracyclin. For this study, we selected patients mainly suffering from papulopustular acne of medium to high degree of severity. Efficacy and tolerance were satisfactory in both groups, and there was no statistically significant difference.

Acne Vulgaris

[13-cis-retinoic acid--an effective therapy for acne conglobata].

46 patients suffering from severe forms of acne conglobata were treated with 13-cis-retinoic acid. The initial dosages of 40, 60 or 80 mg of 13-cis-retinoic acid per day were adapted according to the success of therapy or to severe side effects. Pustules and papules responded promptly followed by the reduction of nodes and cysts. The lesions of the face responded quicker than those of chest and back. After 6 months of therapy, the overall reduction of all acne lesions was 94.4% for the face and 85.8% for chest and back. Thus, the out-standing efficacy of 13-cis-retinoic acid in severe forms of acne conglobata has been documented once more.

Acne Vulgaris

[Herpes simplex].

Publications concerning herpes virus hominis and other viruses of the herpes group have appeared with increasing frequency in the last few years. The mechanism of recurrence is yet not fully elucidated and therapy still remains a problem. The fulminant course of herpes sepsis in the newborn and the generalized herpes infection in the immunodeficient patient can be treated only with difficulty. Neurologic and ophthalmic disease in children can often be linked to neonatal herpes infections. In the category of sexually transmitted diseases, herpes genitalis is becoming more significant. Numerous observations indicate that herpes virus hominis and other members of the herpes group are potential oncogenic agents. This paper presents an overview of recent findings.

Therapeutic aspects of herpes genitalis. A short review.

The treatment of manifestations of infection by herpes simplex hominis virus must be aimed at both the local eruptions and the mechanism of recurrence. Recently, some success has been achieved with the use of vaccines and other agents to stimulate a cell-mediated immunity in patients with recurrent herpes infection.

Effect of benzoyl peroxide on skin surface lipids.

Investigations have been performed on the effect of benzoyl peroxide on skin surface lipids by direct lipid extraction with petrol ether and quantitative determination. Though there was no change after 1 week treatment, after 4 weeks a significant reduction of the casual level as well as well as the replacement sum could be observed.

Acne Vulgaris

[Porphyrinsynthesis of Propionibacterium acnes in acne and seborrhea (author's transl)].

The porphyrin productions of P a.-strains, isolated on the one hand from inlfammatory acne lesions, on the other hand from sebaceous follicle filaments from 10 persons each were compared quantitatively and qualitatively, after the appropriate material had been pooled, With respect to the acne strains one could observe a somewhat increased porphyrin production as well as the discharging of a precentually greater portion of porphyrins to the surrounding material. When separated by TLC the acne material showed a more intense coproporphyrin band.

Acne Vulgaris

[Clinical and experimental studies on the effect of benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne].

In recent years benzoylperoxide has become increasingly popular in the treament of acne. Beside of a dermal irritative and keratolytic effect this was attributed to the bacteriostatic quality of the substance. By in vitro autoradiography and determination of skin surface lipids in benzoylperoxide=treated skin also a sebostatic effect could be observed. Scanning electron microscopy showed that benzoylperoxide influences the horny layer in a similar way like salicylic acid.

Acne Vulgaris

[The tromantadine contact eczema].

Tromantadinhydrochlorid has been established as a local antiviral substance in the treatment of recurrent herpes. With longer duration of treatment contact allergy can be observed. In our own material we noticed this in 26 of 387 treated patients.

Amantadine

Effect of cyproterone acetate on skin surface lipids.

Skin surface lipids in female patients with acne were examined before and after treatment with the oral contraceptive SH 209 AB (2 mg cyproterone acetate and 0.05 mg ethinyl estradiol) by direct extraction with petrol ether and photometrical determination. A significant reduction in the skin surface lipids was seen, together with a remarkable alleviation of the disease.

Acne Vulgaris

Autoradiographic investigation on benzoyl peroxide treated skin.

In vitro autoradiography was used to study the effect of a 5% benzoyl peroxide preparation, or its gel base alone. After three weeks' local application, there was no change in the labelling index of epidermis or follicular infundibulum, while there was a significant reduction in the labelling index of the sebaceous glands. Treatment with the base alone brought about no change.

Acne Vulgaris

[Autoradiographic investigations in actinic (senile) comedones (author's transl].

Skin specimens of patients suffering from actinic comedones, young patients with acne vulgaris, and normal controls of the same age groups respectively were subjected to in vitro autoradiography. From the results it can be concluded, that a rise in the proliferational activity in the follicular infundibulum due to actinic stimuli is responsible for the development and growth of actinic comedones.
