Fine structure of the foveal glands and foveae dorsales of the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say).

The ultrastructure of the foveae dorsales and pheromone glands (foveal glands) of both feeding and unfed female Dermacentor variabilis (Say) was studied. Each pore of the fovea contains a pore tube, with cells surrounding a lumen that can be opened or closed. Each pore tube extends below the fovea and expands to form a cone-shaped ampulla, into which a duct of the foveal gland is inserted. Each duct is lined with microvilli, except near its insertion into the ampulla where the lumen is lined with a brush border. In the feeding female, numerous vesicles and lipid droplets accumulate in and around the ducts. However, in the unfed female, the ducts are free of vesicles or droplets. A nerve, the foveal nerve, occurs in the vicinity of the ducts. Neurosecretory vesicles occur in some of the nerve fibers in the feeding tick. Microorganisms, of unknown identity, were found near the ducts of the pheromone gland in feeding females, but not in unfed females. The secretory lobes of the pheromone glands, representing the major part of these organs, contain large cells which appear to comprise one type. In the feeding female, lipid droplets of varying size occur in vesicles or, more frequently, free in the cytoplasms. The may be clustered or scattered throughout large areas of the cell cytoplasm. Accumulations of vesicles and lipid droplets are especially abundant at the ends of the cells, near the junction with the ducts, where they may occur in a single large membrane-bound enclosure. In the unfed female, the lipid droplets occur only within vesicles, distributed more or less uniformly throughout the gland cells.

Iron and blood donation. Evaluation of a kit method for routine use in a blood transfusion service.

Manifest iron-deficiency anaemia is preceded by a latent stage in which normal haemoglobin levels coexist with low serum iron levels. Regular blood donation involves the removal of significant amounts of iron, and in susceptible donors, may aggravate iron deficiency. It is important for a blood transfusion service to be able to identify these susceptible donors. A commercial kit for the determination of serum iron levels was evaluated and found suitable for introduction as a routine screening test for a transfusion service. A survey of serum iron levels of 200 blood donors showed that 12 1/2% had levels below the normal reference range.

Using peer-group intervention with problem students in a secondary school.

Twenty adolescent girls whose records showed poor academic performance and frequent truancies and referrals to the guidance office were selected to participate in a pilot project to provide a peer-group experience for students having difficulty at school. Half the students were placed in a control group and received regular services from the school. Students in the experimental group attended 12 discussion sessions held during the school day. A one-year follow-up showed that seven in the experimental group and one in the control group had improved.

Psychiatric consultation and teaching in a home for the aged.

An outpatient psychiatric department of a medical center was organized as a community psychiatry team to provide direct services, consultation and education, and preventive programs for high-risk groups. By successfully handling requests for service from a home for the aged, the team established a consultative relationship and then a six-month teaching program centered on problems presented by the home's staff in group sessions. Results included a drop in requests for direct service, the establishment of group programs for residents, and an increase in the home's willingness to accept and deal with disturbed behavior without resort to hospitalization.

A plan for regional medical health centers for the geriatric patient.

A rough plan is proposed which may facilitate the care of geriatric patients. The plan is to introduce pilot programs of geriatric regional centers attached to Veteran's Administration hospitals. Thus, at minimal cost, the problems of geriatric medicine would be under the supervision of our excellent university medical centers.
