This article describes the in vivo evaluation of a new topical preparation (Zincostatin) indicated for Candida albicans infected diaper rash. In order to study the influence of the 20% zinc oxide (W/W) (a protectant) on the anti-candidal efficacy of the 100,000 U/g of nystatin found in the ointment, groups of guinea pigs received different treatments with or without local occlusion. Zinc oxide, nystatin, or the combination of both were applied, in the ointment base, on the backs of the animals inoculated with a fresh strain of Candida albicans. Macroscopic and microbiological evaluation of the skin lesions were assessed at regular intervals during 21 days. While the two treatments containing nystatin were more effective than zinc oxide alone, the latter agent did not decrease the efficacy of the antifungal drug in combination therapy. Also, zinc oxide seemed to afford some protection against local maceration induced by occlusion, which increased the severity of the infection.
The Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome (LMBB) is characterized by the association of obesity, hypogonadism, polydactyly, mental retardation and pigmentary retinitis. Symptomatic or asymptomatic renal dysplasia (calyceal diverticula, precalyceal tubular ectasia, cysts) is frequently associated with LMBB. The authors consider renal sonography as the convenient investigation for an early detection of such dysplasia as in the case they reported here.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate in rats the reproductive effects of toxaphene, an insecticidal mixture which has been identified as a pollutant in the Great Lakes ecosystem. Groups of 30 female and 15 male weanling rats were given toxaphene in the diets at 0, 4.0, 20, 100 or 500 ppm in a 1 generation 2 litter reproduction study. Toxaphene treatment at the levels studied had no effects on the litter size, pup weight, fertility, or gestation and survival indices. Toxic effects in the parental rats included depressed weight gain, elevated serum cholesterol, and increased liver and kidney weight and hepatic microsomal enzyme activities. Most of these effects were associated only with 500 ppm toxaphene treatment. Treatment-related histological changes in the liver, thyroid and kidney of adult rats were observed at levels as low as 20 ppm. Based on the data presented, the no observable adverse effect dose of toxaphene was considered to be 4.0 ppm in the diet (0.29-0.38 mg/kg b.w./day depending on the amount of dietary intake).

The present study was designed to assess whether isoflurane requirement was significantly affected by fresh gas flow in a closed-circuit system. Sixty patients scheduled for orthopaedic procedures were randomly assigned into three groups. In group A (n = 20), anaesthesia was conducted with a fresh gas flow of 482.5 +/- 186.6 ml X min-1, corresponding to the patient's metabolic demand. In group B (n = 20), the fresh gas flow was 2000 ml X min-1. In group C (n = 20), it was adjusted to the ventilation minute, i.e. 7145 +/- 986 ml X min-1. Artificial ventilation was conducted using a tidal volume of 10 ml X kg-1 and a rate of 10 to 12 c X min-1. Anaesthesia was induced after 10 min denitrogenation with fentanyl (4 micrograms X kg-1), thiopentone (4 mg X kg-1) and vecuronium (0.1 mg X kg-1). FIO2 was then brought to 0.5 in nitrous oxide and was monitored continuously using a polarographic oxymeter. Liquid isoflurane was injected in the expiratory limb of the circuit using an electrical syringe driver. Alveolar concentration of isoflurane was set at 0.92 vol. % according to Lowe and Ernst. Statistical analysis was carried out using Student's test for means. Anaesthesia lasted 138 +/- 88.3 min in group A, 125.5 +/- 45.1 min in group B and 146.5 +/- 50 min in group C, no difference being significant.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The process of environmental health risk assessment may be described as a series of distinct stages, ranging from hazard identification and risk estimation to the selection and implementation of an appropriate risk management strategy. An important step in this process is the estimation of health risks at low levels of exposure. The toxicological and epidemiological data base on which such estimates are based are reviewed in the case of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a persistent organochlorine pesticide, along with data on human exposure. This information is used to assess the potential human health risks attributable to HCB.

Compartmentation of intracellular amino acid pools has been studied under various growth conditions in wild-type strains as well as in mutants. Aspartate, glutamate, leucine and isoleucine pools are present in high concentrations in the cytoplasm, while all the other amino acids are more vacuolar. The nature of the nitrogen source for growth, the effectiveness of nitrogen assimilation, the rate of protein synthesis and the presence of high internal basic amino acid pools are important factors in the repartition of amino acid pools between the cytoplasm and the vacuole.
