Diminished mixed lymphocyte reaction in ankylosing spondylitis, relatives, and normal individuals all with HL-A 27.

The mixed lymphocyte reaction against a pool of blocked lymphocytes was studied in individuals with and without HL-A 27, including controls, spouses, parents, sibs, and offspring, and patients with ankylosing spondylitis. In controls without HL-A 27 the mean increment of counts perminute was 46,630 compared with 29,860 in asymptomatic controls and relatives with HL-A 27 and 26,277 in spondylitic patients with HL-A 27. The mean response was also reduced to 34,902 in sibs and offspring without HL-A 27, and to 20,916 in three patients with spondylitis in the absence of HL-A 27.

HLA Antigens↗

HLA frequencies in less common arthropathies.

There was no increased incidence of HLA-B27 in patients suffering from rubella arthropathy, when compared to both the Westminster controls and a group of patients with arthritis secondary to dysentery who nearly all possessed this allele.

The elective treatment of graft-versus-host disease following a bone marrow graft from a father to a son with severe combined immunodeficiency.

The details of the first successful bone marrow graft from father to son are described. The recipient developed an acute graft-versus-host reaction on the seventh day which was successfully treated with anit-lymphocyte globulin and methotrexate. This regime did not destroy the graft and the child is alive and well with normal immunological function some 2 1/2 years later.

Antilymphocyte Serum↗

Association of white cell and red cell antibodies in human sera.

Five hundred and eighteen human sera containing known red cell antibodies were tested for lymphocytotoxic antibodies and 81 sera were found to contain them. Thirty-nine antibodies were fully characterized. The frequencies of anti-I, K, V(w), and Wr(a) were significantly greater in those of the 518 sera which also contained white cell antibodies.Four hundred and ninety-four of the 518 sera containing red cell antibodies contained anti-Rh and anti-Kell. The frequency of white cell antibodies in this group was 15% compared with a frequency of 12% in a series of 923 antenatal samples not containing anti-Rh or anti-Kell. The frequencies of different anti-HL-A specificities were compared in the two groups with or without anti-Rh and anti-Kell antibodies. Anti-HL-A 1, 7, and 8 occurred more frequently in the absence of these red cell antibodies and anti-HL-A 12 occurred more frequently in their presence. No correlation was found between particular red cell and white cell antibodies.
