Sebum levels during the first year of life.

Skin surface lipid levels in forty-five newborn babies and 193 infants aged less than 12 months were determined by an optical density method, using samples collected on ground glass. Although there was a wide individual range, sebum levels in the first week of life were very high, and were of the same magnitude as in adults. Females displayed a different pattern of sebum excretion from males. On the first day of life, the levels in females were lower than in the males but a large increase took place between the 3rd and 6th day, followed by a fall, bringing the level below that of the males. At 6 months the levels were low in both sexes. These findings suggest that there is a strong stimulation of sebum secretion before birth which probably stops at or soon after birth. Androgen may be involved in this stimulation and the probable role of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is discussed.

[Nitrates of agricultural origin: their accumulation in plants and their effect on the environment].

When dealing with the environmental impacts of nitrate nitrogen, one must, first, underline the main place of nitrogen in the dietary needs of man. This element is simultaneously one of the main factors of crop yields, and the first step in the elaboration of proteins. The accumulation of nitrates in crops is defined, its draw-backs are briefly reminded. Nitrate content differs between the organs: stems, petioles, young roots are richer than limbs of leaves; fruits are very poor. The factors of nitrate accumulation are reminded: the nitrogen availability in soil, the light, the other nutrients, and the plant characteristics (e.g., age, cultivar). Ways to obtain a better control of nitrate content in edible parts of spinach, carrot and tomato are discussed. Then, the nitrogen cycle in the soil is briefly described. The influence of various agricultural systems (pastures, annual cropping, wheat, corn, soja) on the nitrate content of groundwater is shown.

[Accumulation of nitrates in carrot root--agronomical consequences].

This paper deals with the effects of various parameters involved in plant nitrogen metabolism, on the nitrate content in carrot roots. Level of mineral nitrogen supply, activity of leaves and light intensity have been taken into account in factorial experiments. Results are discussed with a view to the improvement of the quality of root production with respect to their nitrate content.

Lack of effect of bile in pathogenesis of secretion in mechanical small bowel obstruction.

In dogs, the principal lesion in the ileal mucosa above a mechanical obstruction is the induction of a secretory state in which there is a net loss of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen. The role of stagnated bile as a possible agent provoking this secretion was explored by ligating the common bile duct and diverting the bile by means of an anastomosis between the gall bladder and the ileum distal to the obstruction. 7 days after creation of an obstruction with bile diversion, the functional and morphological changes in the obstructed loop were almost identical to those occurring in animals with obstructions without bile diversion. The secretory response above the obstruction continued unabated, with levels of cAMP in the secreting mucosae lower than in control tissues. These results suggest: (a) that the secretion in the obstructed intestine is not influenced by the presence of bile, and (b) that this secretion may not be secondary to an increase in mucosal cAMP levels.

[Is functional demand a condition without which the pancreatic auto transplant can not survive in the dog's spleen?].

Two groups of mongrel dogs underwent intrasplenic autotransplantation of pancreatic tissues prepared from the head and tail of the organ. In the first group (12), the operation was terminated by the removal of the rest of the gland. In the second group (8), total pancreatectomy was done 6-8 months after autotransplantation. The first group of dogs became spontaneously normoglycemic after ten days of moderate hyperglycemia; their insulinemia increased significantly during a glucose loading test. The second group of dogs never became normoglycemic but remained vivacious; insulin level in their splenic vein increased moderately only after glucose injection. Microscopically, exo- and endocrine pancreatic tissues were seen in the spleens of the first group of dogs; in the spleens of the second group of dogs, only a few degenerating B cells were observed. These results suggest that the temporary hyperglycemia following autotransplantation of pancreatic tissues is a functional demand: it is necessary for ultimate survival and function of transplanted B cells.

[Role of the bile in lesions of the intestinal mucosa above a mechanical occlusion].

Seven days after creation of an obstruction with bile derivation, the functional and morphological changes in the obstructed loop were almost identical to those occurring in animals with obstructions without bile diversion. The secretory response above the obstruction continued unabated. These results suggest that the secretion in the obstructed intestine is not influeced by the presence of bile.

[Nitrate accumulating capability of some market garden vegetables].

Nitrate accumulation in plant is essentially function of the amount of nitrate nitrogen present in the substrate. That can be provided by mineral fertilizers or by organic manure. Due to the amount of nitrogen fertilizers needed in order to obtain sufficient yields the presence of nitrate is a general phenomenon in vegetable. Nevertheless the distribution of nitrate ions in the different parts of the plant influences the importance of the accumulation in the different kinds of vegetable. The experiments reported showed that leaves contain more nitrate ions than roots and roots more than fruit. The results obtained in soilless culture on lettuces, tomatoes and egg-plant demonstrated that the amount of accumulated nitrate is also dependent on the equilibrium between the different ions in the nutrient solution. Ammonium, potassium, sulfate and molybdenum have been shown to influence the rate of nitrate accumulation in the different species. It appears that it is not possible to obtain vegetable without nitrate, but it is possible, by an equilibrated fertilization, to reduce the amount accumulated in the tissue.

[The hemarthroses of articular chondrocalcinosis].

Spontaneous haemarthrosis may occur during the evolution of articular chondrocalcinosis. It occurs mainly in older women and involves the knee in particular. The disorder may recur in the same or in different joints. A study of 11 case histories and counts of red blood corpuscles in samples of synovial fluid confirm that bleeding occurs more readily in chondrocalcinosis than in arthrosis alone. The proposed mechanism of haemarthrosis is only a hypothesis, but it is possible to imagine the onset of microcrystalline flow in a joint that is senile and affected by arthrosis. It is suspected that repeated haemarthrosis favours an oseolytic evolution in certain cases of chondrocalcinosis.
