Short-term effects of induced aniseikonia on the binocular pattern VER.

The amplitude and implicit time of the P-1 component of the binocular transient pattern visually evoked response (VER) was recorded at four levels of induced aniseikonia. No significant changes were found in these VER parameters over a 10-min test period. Several possible explanations for these observations are presented.

Bibliographic control of medical illustrations--a case study in the development of a library subsystem: I. Project planning.

The need to provide bibliographic access to a collection of original medical illustrations led the Library of the University of California, San Francisco, to search for a bibliographic control system and, not finding a satisfactory one, to develop one of its own, Part 1 of the report details the planning for such a development, including the need for bibliographic control of illustrations, the goals of the proposed system, design decisions and changes required, the type of system chosen, special subjects indexing needs, the required output, and staffing and budgetary needs.

Bibliographic control of medical illustrations--a case study in the development of a library subsystem: II. Project implementation.

This second part of a two-part paper describes how the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Library implemented a bibliographic control system for a medical illustrations collection. Discussed are the staffing of the project, the design of formats and computer programs, further design changes, the input process, quality evaluation of the illustrations, and production and distribution of the control products (printed indexes and microfiche replicas). The report ends with a note on the applicability of the UCSF system to other libraries, and some benefits of the project.

Diabetes mellitus and neuropathy following Vacor ingestion in man.

Two patients ingested Vacor, a rodenticide containing the active ingredient N-3 pyridylmethyl-N'-p-nitrophenyl urea. Both patients developed ketosis-prone diabetes mellitus and severe autonomic neuropathy. Niacinamide therapy given nine hours after Vacor ingestion in one patient and 14 hours after ingestion in the other was not successful in preventing these sequelae. Physicians need to be aware of the toxicity of Vacor, and the potential therapeutic benefit of early niacinamide therapy.

A study of transrectal aspiration biopsies of the prostate, with particular regard to prognostic evaluation.

We studied 182 transrectal aspiration biopsies of the prostate primarily to evaluate the reliability of cytologic grading as a method to determine the biological malignancy of prostatic cancer. The technique and cytologic grading are described in detail. All patients with clinical cancer of the prostate were assessed as to whether the disease was stable or progressive. A comparison was made between the clinical assessment and the cytologic grading of the prostatic material. The results show that the patients whose disease was assessed as stable tended to have a high cytologic grade and those assessed as progressive had a low cytologic grade. The importance of this method as a possible prognostic indicator is emphasized.

On the uses of diversity.

An examination is made of the uses of diversity in medical library activities and personnel. This concept is extended also to the broader field of librarianship and to some forecasts of future directions for medical libraries.

Optimal conditions for the growth of malignant human and animal cell populations in immunosuppressed mice.

Immunosuppressed mice have been used to support the growth of xenogeneic human and animal malignant cell populations. The optimal conditions for tumor growth are neonatal thymectomy coupled with antithymocyte serum or thymectomy, followed by whole-body irradiation and bone marrow reconstitution. When mice are inoculated with a mixture of normal and malignant cells, the malignant cells have a selective advantage. No such selectivity is found when the mixed populations are grown in vitro. Human tumors may also be grown in immunosuppressed mice. These tumors retain the organization of the original tumor in the human host. The advantages of this system to cancer researchers are discussed.

Activities for a Regional Medical Library: a view of priorities by users and librarians.

Priorities are given for five major categories of regional medical library activities, with further ordering of some fifty specific activities, as determined through discussion with, and a questionnaire survey of, the advisory committee of the Midcontinental Regional Medical Library. These activity priorities are considered a working tool for formulation of objectives and development of plans, and do not include a consideration of methodologies for implementation. User and librarian responses are noted and some interpretive comments are made.
