Smoking policies and smoking cessation programs of large employers in Massachusetts.

To assess the current extent of programs and policies to facilitate smoking cessation among employees, we queried 128 large employers in Massachusetts in mid-1978. Eighty-four (66 per cent) responded. Fifty-four (64 per cent) of the respondents had designated jobs or work areas in which smoking was prohibited usually because of potential danger to products or equipment. Seven (8 per cent) of the employers provided counseling, and 10 (12 percent) provided smoking cessation programs for those employees who desired to quit smoking. There is a clear need for the development and evaluation of workplace policies and programs aimed at reducing smoking.

In vitro development of inner cell masses isolated from t0/t0 and tW5/tW5 mouse embryos.

Inner cell masses (ICMs) isolated immunosurgically from mouse blastocysts segregating the homozygous lethal mutants t0/t0 and tW5/tW5 were cultured in vitro. Presumed t0/t0 ICMs fail to grow after three days in culture (equivalent gestational day 7.5) when they consist of an outer layer of endoderm cells surrounding about 30 epiblast cells. Presumed homozygous tW5/tW5 ICMs develop to a more advanced stage in culture and on the seventh day (equivalent gestational day 11.5) consist of an inner core of disorganized ectoderm cells with a small proamniotic cavity, surrounded by multiple layers of endoderm cells.

A combined transcutaneous pulse-echo and Doppler ultrasonic technique for the measurement of brachial artery peak velocity.

The Parks Model 806 Doppler blood velocity meter was shown to have a linear voltage output with respect to input frequencies of up to 5kHz. It was linear and accurate to velocities of 70 cms-1 at angles of 50 degrees and 60 degrees to the flow, on a steady flow rig, and shown to have a linear frequency response to 9Hz. A combined pulse echo and Doppler transducer system has been developed allowing quantitation of arterial peak velocity.

Nuclear labeling in immunoperoxidase studies of mouse tissue as detected by staining at acid pH.

Several peroxidase-Ig conjugates were applied to sections of fixed mouse tissue. When the peroxidase staining reaction was done at pH 4.5 instead of pH 7.4, a striking reaction on nuclear membrane, chromatin, or chromosomes was observed. This staining was prevented by pretreatment of sections with DNase but not with RNase or after acid elution of histones. It is suggested that at acid pH a redistribution and binding DNA of oxidized chromogen or of a chromogen-conjugate complex to DNA may account for the results observed.

Deinstitutionalization in two cultures.

American and British reformers may act as if reducing the number of beds alone reduces human distress or the incidence and prevalence of psychiatric illness. Deinstitutionalization requires a recognition of changed relationships between patients and staff, and between patients and families. Our two cultures have responded differently to questions of where, by whom, and how to treat their mental patients.
