Twelve separate outbreaks of confirmed cowpox, 10 involving humans, were reviewed. Six of the patients, including three children, had severe infections and five were admitted to hospital. In three outbreaks both people and cows were affected but it was not known how the infections entered the herds. In seven outbreaks no direct contact with cattle was established and clinical and serological examination failed to show evidence of cowpox in the bovine population. Comparison of these data with information about infections known to be enzootic in cattle leads to the suggestion that cows are not the natural reservoir of cowpox. This should be remembered when diagnosis is considered. The role of small wild animals as hosts and vectors of "cowpox" should be investigated.

Proxviruses isolated from captive elephants in Germany have been characterized. Although related to vaccinia and even more closely to cowpox virus, the separate identity of elephantpox virus was established by both biological and serological methods. Elephantpox virus produces A-type inclusions in infected cells, as did cowpox, but had a lower ceiling temperature, was more heat resistant and affected rabbits differently. Cross neutralization tests on absorbed sera indicated that elephantpox, cowpox and vaccinia viruses shared one surface antigen, that elephantopox and vaccinia shared an antigen absent from cowpox, and that vaccinia virus had a surface antigen absent from elephantopox and cowpox viruses.

Young camels were inoculated intradermally with either camelpox or smallpox virus and the courses of infection, including serological response, were compared. Camelpox virus was highly infectious; generalized disease resulted which was transmitted naturally to contact animals. Smallpox virus produced only transient lesions at the inoculation site and a less marked serological response. Nevertheless, the camels inoculated with smallpox virus subsequently resisted a severe challenge with camelpox virus, and the possibility that limited replication of smallpox virus took place is discussed. The differences demonstrated between the behavior of the vituses is discussed in the light of their otherwise close relationship and the limited information available about camelpox infections in man.

The cytopathic effect of smallpox and camelpox viruses has been compared in cell cultures derived from human and monkey tissues. The two viruses could easily be distinguished in HeLa, GMK-AH1, BSC-1 and WISH cells, camelpox producing multinucleate giant cells and smallpox producing rounding up of individual cells. In other cells (LLC-MK2, HEK and 2RhK) the differences were not so marked, and in some (VERO, HEL, K and HuTh) no differences were seen.
Seven smallpox vaccines of known human pathogenicity were tested for their ability to produce pocks on the chick chorioallantois at 39.7 degrees C. Significant differences were found and the more pathogenic strains produced pocks with greater efficiency at 39.7 degrees C. than did strains of average or low pathogenicity.

Antisera prepared against vaccinia and cowpox viruses were absorbed with purified suspensions of vaccinia virus, red cowpox and white cowpox viruses. They were then tested for their ability to neutralize the viruses, and to precipitate the virus soluble antigens. The results showed that some virus specific antigens were not virus surface components and that some components were present on the surface of all three viruses. However, certain components were detected on the surface of vaccinia virus but not on the surface of cowpox virus, and vice versa. Some evidence for the existence of a vaccinia-specific surface component was also obtained.Comparisons between results of cross-neutralization tests and immunodiffusion tests on the absorbed sera indicated that antibody to a number of antigens, including the classical LS, and the cowpox-specific d antigen play no part in the process of poxvirus neutralization.
