[Longevity of a population exposed to fluorides for decades].

Among a population with considerable fluor exposure lasting for decades and that of the corresponding district the proportion of older persons was compared per cent. In the five-year groups from 70 to 89 years without any exception a prevalence in favour of the place with fluor load was found. Cumulatively significant differences in favour of the population under influence of fluor was found. The possible causes for the suggested connections between fluor effect in the organism and obtaining of older ages are represented.

Exposed scleral buckle: a case report in an eleven-year course.

One patient with an exposed scleral buckling element in the left eye was initially followed conservatively. Soon after exposure, he developed a retinal detachment in the fellow eye, resulting in loss of useful vision. Because of concern over possible redetachment and loss of vision in the remaining eye, the patient has been followed with the exposed element for more than 11 years. Treatment has consisted solely of prophylactic topical antibiotics.

A practice plan in a municipal teaching hospital: a model for the funding of clinical faculty.

Academic-practice plans have become increasingly important as a source of financial support for the faculty of academic centers. We describe the planning, implementation, and development of one such plan in a municipal hospital, a major affiliate of a medical school. The incorporated practice plan is nonprofit and is owned and governed by physicians. Its success during the eight years of its existence has resulted in growth of the faculty, the development of innovative ambulatory-care programs, and increased financial stability of the hospital. Although such problems as payment for teaching costs and academic advancement for primary-care physicians remain, it is clear that academic-practice plans can support the clinical, teaching, and research goals of academic physicians.

[Bone mineral content determination by the photon absorption technic in chronic non-occupational fluoride exposure].

Bone mineral content and bone width of radius were examined by use of bone mineral analyser in persons with long-term nonoccupational fluoride exposition. Investigations took place in 275 female and 194 male without professional fluoride influence. Comparison with normal values showed no significant differences after fluoride exposition. The meaning of these findings is discussed.

Expanding psychiatric service in a hospital emergency room.

Senior medical residents were used to extend psychiatric coverage in a busy hospital emergency room. Their service was supported by the backup consultation of senior psychiatric physicians. The medical residents worked in conjunction with psychiatric residents to provide 24-hour daily emergency psychiatric service to more than 350 patients during a 12-month period. There were no significant differences in the demographic composition of the patient population seen or in the disposition of individual patients made between the medical and psychiatric residents. The hospital was able to expand its psychiatric service in the emergency room without major increases in cost. The medical residents benefited by experiencing a more diversified patient care training program, and they earned a modest supplement to their houser officer salary.

[Frequency of bone fractures in chronic fluoride exposure].

In order to establish the frequency of bone fractures in 2 population groups with increased and decreased fluor exposition, respectively, the case histories of a surgical ward for men were evaluated. Of 10 age groups ten times a lower percental frequency of fractures in combination with an increased presence of fluor was found. Fluorides have got an increasing significance for the prophylaxis of fractures in the treatment of osteoporosis.
