Ten healthy volunteers received infusions of 500 ml of a 10% solution of middle-molecular-weight hydroxy-ethyl-starch (HES 200, HAES-steril 10%) within 30 min. Measurements of hemorheological parameters before and up to 3 hrs after infusion revealed a statistically significant decrease of whole-blood viscosity and a slight, but also statistically significant increase of plasma viscosity. RBC filterability and RBC aggregation remained unchanged. The data presented show that despite of a relatively high molecular weight of the infused HES-solution which is responsible for the relatively long intravascular persistence, the flow properties of blood as a whole are positively influenced.
Five cases of oral rhabdomyosarcoma in childhood are reported. Four of these children, who were all aged between 3 and 14 years, were girls. In all patients, combined therapy was undertaken which included tumour resection, radiation and chemotherapy. Problems in treatment and prognosis are discussed, and the clinical, histomorphological and ultrastructural findings are described.

Two hundred ten patients with advanced adenocarcinoma of the lung were entered into a two-arm randomized trail. Cytoxan + CCNU + methotrexate was compared to Adriamycin and procarbazine. The tumor response to CCM was significantly higher than the tumor response to Adriamycin and procarbazine. No significant difference existed between the two treatments with respect to survival. Initial performance status, weight loss prior to therapy, and response to therapy were all found to be significant prognostic factors. Median survival time relative to responders in both treatment groups was 31.7 weeks and 15.8 weeks for non-responders.
Liver involvement in Sjögren's syndrome is little known in oral medicine. The involvement of the oral cavity and salivary glands is often diagnosed as an additional symptom during a general internal examination. This study shows that, even in the case of extensive liver involvement with considerable hepatic enzyme alterations, complaints in the mouth and jaw region can initially lead the patient to seek the advice of a dentist.
The various legal forms of contracts for dental treatment were explained on the basis of 23 legally binding decisions made by courts of the Federal Republic of Germany. Employment contract law, work contract law, and a combination of employment and work contract law come into question. A decision in favor on the patient or the dentist is possible with all types of contracts. Recently, a tendency has been noticed toward employment contract law, whereby the work done by the dental technician has been exclusively judged according to work contract law.
The dentists of 48 patients with hepatitis B and 70 patients with hepatitis non-B were questioned about the type and time of dental treatment these patients received during the incubation period. Compared with a control group, no indications were found which related the dental treatment to the transmission of the infection.
584 patient claims taken from the files of liability insurance agencies were evaluated and classified according to type and frequency, including the respective court decisions, when known. The different requirements for claims of negligence and lack of information were presented briefly. The results of this survey of liability claims which were actually raised in the practice provide helpful information on how liability damage may be avoided.
The influence of the fibrin-stabilizing coagulation factor XIII is necessary for the formation of a stable blood clot. The factor is not included in the usual global coagulation tests. The presence of lowered concentrations of this factor can be congenital or acquired as a result of various diseases. A lowered concentration of factor XIII was demonstrated in six patients with otherwise normal coagulation tests during a secondary hemorrhage a few days after an extraction. The hemorrhage was attributed to the lowered resistance of the instable blood clot over against the fibrinolytic characteristics of the buccal cavity milieu.

Liability claims of 153 patients receiving prosthetic treatment were organized according to damage and were discussed on the basis of the known decisions and judgements of the courts.
145 dental injuries in 83 patients occuring during general anaesthesia are classified on the basis of the material from a liability insurance company. These mainly affected the upper incisors. In childhood only luxations occured, in other ages no characteristic distribution of different types of damage could be found. Besides intubation, 20 per cent of injuries were caused by Guedel oral airways. Damage to teeth is the main cause of claims in tort from its total number. Damage of healthy teeth generally is due to carelessness, whereas an injury to teeth damaged by other reasons before administration of general anaesthesia causes liability of the anaesthesiologist because of inadequate examination and exploration.
