Coronaviruslike particles in human gastrointestinal disease. Epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory observations.

Coronaviruslike particles (CVLPs) were visualized by direct electron microscopy (EM) of diarrheal stools in 49 of 126 infants and children between 1 month and 12 years of age during a three-year observation period. The clinical and epidemiologic features of these patients were analyzed and compared with patients with diarrhea who were shedding rotaviruses, or whose stools were negative for enteric viruses by EM. Seasonal and age distributions for CVLP shedding were similar to those for rotaviruses (in most cases less than 1 year of age; peak months were September through January), as were the symptoms and median durations of illness. Prospective studies of three subsequent patients suggest that the duration of shedding in acute illness is five to at least 25 days. Multiple attempts to cultivate the CVLPs were unsuccessful. In addition, partial purification of CVLPs from stool specimens was performed, and immunologic analysis by immunoelectron microscopy and radial immunodiffusion showed no antigenic relatedness to prototype human (OC43 and 229E) or animal (bovine and canine) coronaviruses. These findings suggest that CVLPs may be an important cause of acute gastrointestinal illness in infancy, and may represent a virus antigenically unrelated to known human and animal coronaviruses.

[Clinical and therapeutic approach to anxiety-depression syndromes. Effectiveness of bromazepam (author's transl)].

In anxiety-depression syndromes intricacy of the symptoms is such that the relative importance of the two components must be assessed for adequate treatment with anxiolytic and/or antidepressant drugs. The anxiolytic activity of bromazepam was evaluated in 30 patients with anxiety-depression syndrome. A tricyclic antidepressant was added in cases with marked disorders in mood. Results were assessed by means of the Hamilton and Pull-Guelfi scales and Beaumont's self-evaluation scores. Fourteen patients were treated with bromazepam alone in doses adjusted to the therapeutic response, and 16 patients received both bromazepam showed rapid and consistent anxiolytic activity, except in 4 cases which required adjunction of an antidepressant. The drug was well tolerated, provided individual susceptibilities were taken into consideration.

Folate derivatives in human cells: studies on normal and 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase-deficient fibroblasts.

The distribution of folylpolyglutamates in normal and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase-deficient human fibroblasts cultured in medium containing folic acid or 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid has been determined. Human fibroblasts concentrated these folates to higher levels than in the medium, an effect that was more pronounced with methyltetrahydrofolate as the folate source. Over 95% of the intracellular vitamin derivatives were polyglutamates of chain length 2 to 10. The major derivatives were hexaglutamates in cells cultured with folic acid and heptaglutamates in cells cultured with methyltetrahydrofolic acid. No significant differences were detected in the polyglutamate distribution between normal and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase-deficient fibroblast. Excess medium methionine reduced cell growth rates and intracellular vitamin levels and changed the predominant polyglutamate in cells cultured with methyltetrahydrofolate from hepta- to hexaglutamate. No significant differences were seen between the overall folate polyglutamate distributions of different one-carbon folate pools of normal fibroblasts, although slight changes in the proportions of individual polyglutamate forms were detected in the different pools.

[The effects of wheat bran and pectin on the oral glucose tolerance test in patients after gastric surgery (author's transl)].

In 23 patients previously operated on the stomach, the effect of pectin and wheat bran on the glucose tolerance test (G.T.T.) has been studied. If wheat bran had no significant effect on the glucose tolerance curve, pectin had a significant effect, lowering blood glucose value before the 90th minute (1,32 +/- 0,33 g/l as against 1,87 +/- 0,23 on the 30th minute) and elevating blood glucose value after the 90th minute of the G.T.T. (0.90 +/- 0,30 as against 0, 63 +/- 0,26 on the 120th minute). Therapeutic efficiency of pectin was confirmed in three patients who had symptoms of hypoglycaemia, which disappeared with the intake of 5 g of pectin before each meal.

[Thalassemia in French-speaking Quebec residents].

Eighty-five cases of beta-thalassemia minor were found between January 1975 and November 1977 in 18 families of French-speaking Quebeckers without Mediterranean ancestry. Most of the families had settled in Quebec more than 200 years ago, largely in Portneuf county. This is the first report of such a number of cases of beta-thalassemia in this population. Thus, beta-thalassemia minor is a relatively common condition in Quebec and must be considered in cases of microcytic anemia without evidence of iron deficiency. The hematologic findings were similar to those reported in the past in other populations. Two cases of delta beta-thalassemia minor (in sisters) are also reported; this is the first report of such cases in French Canadians.
