[Epidemiological study of onchocercosis in 5 villages of the valley of the Sanaga (Cameroon)].

The study carried out in five villages in the Sanaga Valley of Cameroon was concerned with the prevalence of the disease, the level of infection and an evaluation of the effect of the parasites on the health of the people. Entomological data were also collected. The study was concerned with the onchocerciasis found in the forest area where the disease is hyperendemic. The males are infected moreoften than the females. Among the adults the skin and lymphatic lesions are extremly important. It was found that as the visual acuity diminishes with age, from age forty many for the people are blind. The villages most affected are those situated near the Sanaga rapids where there is a concentration of the breeding sites of the vectors.

[Epidemiology of intestinal helminthiasis (necatoriasis, taeniasis, ascariasis, trichuriasis) in the Kaya Region (Upper-Volta)].

Prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis: 1 223 stool specimens are examined in Louda and 690 in Damesma (Kaya, Upper-Volta). In this sample eggs of N. americanus are seen in 14,7% of the specimens in Louda and 9,3% in Damesma. Eggs of H. nana are seen in 10% of the specimens, for the two villages. Eggs of T. saginata are seen in 7.4% of the specimens of the two villages. And eggs of A. lumbricoides, T. trichicera are found inters then 0.5% of the specimens.

[Hepatic distomatosis caused by Clonorchis/Opisthorchis spp. in refugees from South-East Asia. Effects of treatment with praziquantel].

The prevalence of liver infection (percentage of patients voiding Clonorchis or Opistorchis spp. eggs in faeces) is 18.5% in the South East Asian refugees. Both sexes are equally affected and the older the refugees are, the more often they are found infected. Laotians, who like to eat the fishes raw, are harboring leverflukes more often than other Far-east inhabitants. Praziquantel, prescribed at a dose of 25 mg/kg body weight given 3 times on a single day, is very efficient in the treatment of the Far-east hepatic distomatosis. Tolerability to praziquantel is excellent. Side effects are few and of moderate intensity.

[Epidemiologic study of malaria in the Koza region (North Cameroon)].

The data obtained in the survey carried out in the villages of the Mandara mountains are as follows. P. falciparum is the only species of Plasmodium which has been found in the area. The parasitic rate in children 2 to 9 years of age is 40.8 p. 100 and the spleen rate 35.6 p. 100. The immunofluorescent test performed with an homologous P. falciparum antigen is positive in 37.7 p. 100 of the children of this class of age. The thick drop shows parasites in 25 p. 100 of the newborn children. The parasitic load rated by number of blood cells harboring parasites is high in young children, then diminishing in adults while the antibodies increased. Malaria cases are more numerous at the end of the rainy season but a new spell of the disease is also noticed at the beginning of the year while the outside temperature is especially high. Malaria, now mesoendemic in the study area, seems to decrease as far as parasite and spleen rates are concerned in comparison with the rates obtained in the Mandara mountains 20 years ago. This seems to be a consequence of an increase in the intake of chloroquine by the inhabitants.
