Forty-three strains of E. aerogenes isolated chiefly in Morocco and France have been studied. Thirty-five strains (81%) are surrounded with a thin capsule, antigenically related to Klebsiella capsular antigens: K4 (2 strains), K4, 59 (1 strain), K11 (2 strains), K26 (7 strains), K42 (5 strains), K59 (3 strains), K68 (14 strains). One strain is capsulated but not typable with Klebsiella capsular antisera. E. aerogenes and Klebsiella capsular antigens are not identical but share common fractions yielding cross reactions. To differenciate E. aerogenes from K. pneumoniae in addition with the three major characters, i.e. motility, ornithine-decarboxylase and urease, the author points out the value of growth in metahydroxybenzoate as sole source of carbon and energy (positive test with E. aerogenes and negative with K. pneumoniae).

Actinomycosis is a rare disease and may be discovered at operation. It may produce numberous thoracic or abdominal signs; the diagnosis is very difficult and requires histological examination.

Successful fetoscopy using a 9 mm laparoscope was carried out on an 18-week pregnancy of a healthy woman who had had two previous male infants with bilateral double big toes, bilateral ulnar supernumerary digits associated with short segment Hirschsprung's disease, and ventricular septal defect of the heart, a syndrome apparently not previously described. The fetus was found to be normal, but an amniotic membrane defect was detected, which accounted for amniotic fluid leakage from 24 weeks up to delivery by caesaren section of a normal male infant at 35 weeks. The possible genetic basis and recurrence risk, put at probably one in four for this syndrome, is discussed. The indications for fetoscopy are set out and a fundal approach at laparotomy after placental localization is recommended for the procedure.
50 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated by blood cultures at Brugmann Hospital (Brussels) between 1967 and 1971. The biochemical and antigenic characteristics of the strains and their sensitivity to antibiotics were determined for epidemiological purposes. With the exception of the strains found in an hemodialysis unit, where the study showed the existence of an epidemic focus caused by serotype 28 biotype d, the strains consisted of a large number of capsular serotypes and of biotypes, excluding a single source of contamination for these septicemic infections. There is no relationship between the serotype of the strains and their sensitivity to antibiotics.
Sone strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and K. oxytoca grown on nutrient agar may appear "urease negative" in a Ferguson type reagent medium after a 24 h incubation at 37 degrees C. Amongst such 147 so called urease negative strains, urease has been detected within a few hours in 79 strains, when bacteria have grown on media containing carbohydrates (Kligler iron agar, Drigalski lactose agar, SS agar and Worfel-Ferguson sucrose medium). Acid production by carbohydrate fermentation increases urease production by Klebsiella: pH 4 is the most convenient pH for urease synthesis by these bacteria. The other 68 strains have been considered as urease-less Klebsiella. The best results are obtained from culture on Worfel-Ferguson sucrose medium: urea hydrolysis is positive--on an average-after 1 hour and 30 minutes when detected in a Ferguson type reagent medium, and after 2 hours and 35 minutes when detected in a Christensen reagent medium.
Lymphocytes are heterogeneous with respect to their life-span. Typical B cells, bearing on their membranes immunoglobulin receptors, easily detectable by immunofluorescence, belong mainly to the long-lived population: this can be observed using combined autoradiography and immunofluorescence. However, when primed mice receive (-3H) thymidine before a boosting injection of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), many plasma cells appearing in the spleen during the secondary response are labelled. In irradiated recipients repopulated with spleen cells from donors primed with TMV and injected with tritiated thymidine 2 hours before killing, the majority of plasms cells appearing in the spleen after antigen injection were labelled. If irradiated mice were repopulated simultaneously with spleen cells from donors primed with TMV and injected with (-3H) thymidine, and from donors primed with haemocyanin, most of the anti-TMV plasms cells were labelled, while most of the anti-haemocyanin plasma cells were unlabelled. These results allowed us to exclude non-specific reutilization of labelled thymidine as the main reason of our observations. It is concluded that either plasma cells derive from shortlived precursors or they receive material from a labelled cell able to co-operate specifically with plasma cell precursors.
