A light microscopic study was carried out in the coronary arteries of 112 apparently healthy subjects aged 41-50 years who died of accidents, in an attempt to reveal some particular aspects of atherosclerotic involvement occurring in the preclinical stage of coronary heart disease. Three of these particular aspects were stressed in the present study: 1. The important occurrence during the fifth decade of life of microthrombi and their encrustation within preexisting and newly formed atherosclerotic plaques, followed by a significant augmentation in the obstructive character of these plaques. 2. The dramatic increase in the number of subjects with a three-vessel involvement by atherosclerotic plaques. 3. The appearance of many obstructive atherosclerotic plaques in some branch vessels usually unopened and/or not removed during ordinary gross inspection.
The term "intercalated vascular segment" is used by the authors to designate a structural accomodation to the existence of diffuse thickened intimas, occurring as local vascular connections between the lumen of the main coronary arteries and the branch mouths of the daughter vessels. They exhibit the light microscopic feature of cylindrical conduits including only an endothelial sheet encased by the intimal connective tissue. The most important change related to aging and atherosclerotic involvement seems to be the conversion of some intercalated vascular segments in rigid, undistensible and narrowed conduits; this might produce local changes similar to those of a fixed stenosis. In the material examined the presence of narrowed conduits was sometimes associated with the existence of small areas of necrosis in the myocardium supplied by the vessel corresponding to the respective intercalated vascular segment.

In an unselected population sample of Bucharest aged 0-45 years, a similar branching anatomical pattern of the coronary arteries was revealed in 58% of the subjects. In the remainder 42% of cases 15 different minor deviations from the basal branching anatomical pattern were detected. Among these minor deviations, 4 occurred constantly associated, 8 only occasionally associated (1/3-1/2 of cases) and 3 were not associated with an accelerated atherosclerosis. The "atherogenic" deviations, characterized by an excessive size and length of the left coronary artery and an underdeveloped right coronary artery or vice versa, led to a more precocious development and more severe evolution of atherosclerotic plaques in the hyperperfused vessel.
The present paper reports on a Q fever outbreak of 149 cases in a municipal slaughter house focus. The diagnosis was established by clinical, epidemiological, radiologic and laboratory investigations. The route of transmission was air-borne from the sick animals (not detected at the veterinary control) to man. A closer cooperation is recommended between the human and veterinary health services, for early detection of the cases, their prevention and control. The authors suggest the need to immunize the personnel exposed to the risk of contamination (zoo technical units, slaughter house personnel, etc.).
Important discrepancies were revealed in a study on human coronary and cerebral atherosclerosis among data furnished by gross inspection and by light microscopy. The character of atherosclerotic lesions, the meaning of the terms "normal intimas" "fatty streaks", "fibrous plaques" and "complicated lesions", the type of the early atherosclerotic lesions, the age period of the onset of these early lesions, their sequence of development, their relationship to advanced lesions--all appeared method dependent. The gross inspection alone led not only to an oversimplified, but also to a distorded view on the natural history of atherosclerosis, since it overlooked the role of intimal necrosis, incorporated microthrombi, fibromuscular plaques, mucoid plaques and foam cell-rich plaques in atherogenesis. The degree and extent to which the early stages of atherosclerotic involvement remained undetected by gross inspection was surprisingly great. The difference between the number of atherosclerotic plaques recorded on microscopic and macroscopic examination of the same vascular segments was statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Our results suggest that all basic studies of human atherosclerosis must include intermingled macroscopic and microscopic examination of the same arterial segments and require the use of an adequate terminology.
The present paper reports on a Q fever episode, including 45 subjects (caretakers, technicians, workers building stables) in a zootechnical cooperative in the district of Argeş. In the new unit milch and reproduction cows were brought from various parts of the district. None of the animals showed visible signs of the disease. No cases of Q fever had been reported in man or animals in the locality until then. The episode had an explosive character, the outbreak occurring during the calving season. The diagnosis was established clinically, epidemiologically, radiologically and serologically.

A renin-like enzyme was determined in the acetone-dried tissue of human pituitaries, in both the anterior and posterior pituitaries using Boucher micromethod. The mean pituitary concentration of the renin-like activity (RA) was equivalent to 60.4+/-7.1 (SEM) ng angiotensin II/g tissue protein/h. The possible functional relationship between the hypophyseal and the brain renin-like enzyme is discussed.
