A biochemical and ultrastructural comparison of Triton X-100 models of normal and transformed cells.

We have compared the two-dimensional gel profiles of Triton models of normal rat kidney (NRK) cells and their Kirsten viral transformant, 442. Several protein differences were detected. The models of the transformed line lacked five acidic polypeptides and possessed a much higher intermediate filament to actin ratio. Scanning microscopy reveals significant ultrastructural differences in these models, with the NRK line exhibiting a much more filamentous structure. In addition, nuclease treatment of NRK models causes a dramatic change in their scanning image while the 442 models are unaffected. Nuclease treated models lack microfilaments and appear to contain only intermediate filaments, although actin is still a prominent protein constituent.

Subclinical coeliac disease.

The prevalence of coeliac disease (CD) was investigated in an epidemiological study of school children from a district of Rome. Mass screening of IgA-AGA levels (anti-gliadin antibody) were determined in blood samples from the study group and the results were positive in 19 children. Eighteen of these agreed to undergo endoscopic biopsy. Histological study of the duodenal specimens revealed villous atrophy in twelve children none of whom had the characteristic symptoms of CD. The most frequent complaints were abdominal pain, aphtous stomatitis, and atopic dermatitis. The high prevalence of CD in this study suggests the necessity for the widest range of epidemiological research.

[Microcytosis. A hematological characteristic common to diverse diseases].

The pathological conditions characterized by microcytosis are reviewed and their pathophysiological mechanisms also at the molecular level are described. Moreover clinical, haematological and laboratory findings for differential diagnosis are discussed. Finally, the most efficacious schedules for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia are reported.
