Occupational dermatitis in a prefabrication construction factory.

In a field study of occupational dermatoses in a prefabrication construction factory, 272 workers were interviewed, examined and patch tested to chromate, cobalt, nickel, rubber mixes, epoxy resin, melamine formaldehyde and conplasts. The prevalence of occupational dermatitis was 14% (38/272); 57% (22/38) were irritant dermatitis from cement; 39.5% (15/38) were allergic contact dermatitis from cement (2 with concomitant rubber glove allergy); and 2.5% (1/38) were allergic to rubber chemicals in gloves. The overall prevalence of chromate sensitivity was 8.5% (23/272), with the highest rate from the concreting bays of the factory. The rate was unrelated to the duration of workers' engagement in construction work. 34.8% (8/23) had asymptomatic chromate allergy. The prevalence of cobalt reactions was 17.4% (4/23) and all were associated with chromate allergy.

Irritant dermatitis from tri-N-butyl tin oxide in paint.

Organo-tin compounds are known irritants. Tributyl tin oxide is a common biocide in some marine and other paints. An outbreak of irritant contact dermatitis in painters exposed to paints containing tributyl tin oxide is reported.

Occupational dermatitis from soldering flux among workers in the electronics industry.

Although numerous occupational irritants and allergens have been known to cause contact dermatitis in the electronics industry, soldering flux is seldom mentioned. Soldering flux used in the electronics industry can cause both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Irritant dermatitis is commoner than allergic contact dermatitis. Aminoethylethanolamine, a constituent of some fluxes, is a sensitizer. Dermatitis tends to start over the periungual area and spread to the finger shafts and sometimes the wrists. The use of cotton gloves by workers appeared to aggravate the problem. Prophylactic measures are essential to prevent occupational contact dermatitis in workers handling flux in the electronics industry.

Hepatitis B virus markers in prostitutes in Singapore.

The prevalence of hepatitis B virus markers in 121 men and 239 women prostitutes was studied. Of 33 (9.7%) with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), nine (27.3%) also had hepatitis Be antigen, which was more prevalent in men than women. Antibodies to HBsAg (anti-HBs) and to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) were found in about 71% of men and women prostitutes. Hepatitis B virus markers were more prevalent in men than in women prostitutes. Compared with other people, prostitutes had a significantly greater prevalence of hepatitis B virus markers. This study strongly suggested the importance of sexual transmission of infection with hepatitis B virus in a country where infection is endemic.

Photosensitivity associated with carprofen (Imadyl).

Photodermatitis from Carprofen in 3 patients was reported. The absorbance spectrum of Carprofen revealed maximum absorbance at UVB range. The clinical presentation in the 3 patients suggested that a phototoxic mechanism may be responsible.

Chemoprophylaxis and gonococcal infections in prostitutes.

The influence of chemoprophylaxis on gonorrhoea has not been reported recently. 777 prostitutes were interviewed and checked for evidence of chemoprophylaxis. The study showed that chemoprophylaxis does reduce the risk of gonococcal infections and that those who took penicillin chemoprophylaxis had a higher risk of Penicillinase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) infections compared to those who took non-penicillin chemoprophylaxis and those who did not take any prophylaxis.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome associated with occupational exposure to trichloroethylene.

Reports on cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (erythema multiforme major) have seldom related it to occupational exposure to chemicals. Serious liver involvement is also uncommon. This report describes 5 cases of the syndrome who had been occupationally exposed to trichloroethylene. The circumstantial evidence suggested that the chemical might have been a causative factor in the disease. The liver was involved in all and in 3 it was serious, with one death. The degree of exposure to trichloroethylene varied. The duration of exposure ranged from 2 to 5 weeks. It seemed likely that there was a hypersensitive reaction to trichloroethylene in these cases.

Cross sensitivity in colour developers.

Colour developers are widely used and contact dermatitis and lichen planus-like eruptions from them are well-known. As a result of automation, there have been few recent reports of contact dermatitis from colour developers. We describe here 4 cases of dermatoses from Kodak CD4 colour developer and study their cross sensitivity to other colour developers and PPD. Attempts were made to determine the purity of the patch test allergens to ensure that cross sensitivity was not the result of contamination and decomposition of the allergens.

Occupational dermatoses in Singapore.

A study of occupational dermatoses is described. 97% of 389 cases were contact dermatitis, of which 66.3% were irritant and 33.7% allergic, in both male and female workers. Cutting oils, solvents and flux from the engineering and electronic industries were the commonest irritants, and chromate from cement in the construction industry was the commonest allergen. The other occupational allergens were rubber chemicals and epoxy resin. The construction industry was the largest source of occupational dermatoses cases seen; possible preventive measures are discussed.

Dermatomyositis in a skin clinic.

12 cases of dermatomyositis were seen in the Middle Road Hospital over a five year period. 2 cases were childhood dermatomyositis. Of the 10 adult patients, the majority (7) were in the younger age group between 21 to 40 years old. The incidence of underlying malignancy was 60% in adult patients and of all the malignancies, 66.7% were nasopharyngeal carcinoma. 4 of the 6 patients with underlying malignancy were in the younger age group of 21-40 years old which was previously reported as uncommon.
