New Jersey type vesicular stomatitis (VS) antibodies were found in 14 of 677 deer serums tested by neutralization tests in embryonated chicken eggs. Twelve positive serums were received from Louisiana and two from Georgia. Eight of the positive deer serums from Louisiana were collected in the area of the only reported case of VS during 1967. Clinical VS has not been diagnosed in the east coast states since 1964. Two positive deer serums were collected on Ossabaw Island, Georgia, and three positive serums, one each from a hog, bull, and sheep, were collected from young animals on the island. These findings indicated subclinical infection or a nidus of New Jersey VS in Georgia. The low percentage of New Jersey type VS antibodies in deer and the distribution parallel the low incidence of VS since 1964. No antibodies were present for Indiana type VS virus.

Woody plants were sprayed with an aqueous homogenate of the n-butyl ester of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Leaf extracts were studied by gas-liquid chromatography, and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol was always present. The formation of 2,4,5-trichloroanisole apparently did not occur.

The pathological features of 67 cases of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid were studied, and when possible the case histories were reviewed. The typical tumour is sharply demarcated but not encapsulated, is composed of sheets of cells having eosinophilic granular cytoplasm, with the deposition of amyloid in the stroma. We would stress the frequency of binucleate cells, the scarcity of mitoses, and the frequent occurrence of calcification. The clinical findings show a wide variation in age at presentation of this tumour, and a wide variation in prognosis, with a mean survival from the time of presentation to hospital of 6.6 years, the longest being 21 years. Two of this group of patients also had phaeochromocytomas; these two and three others showed small papillary tumours of the eyelids, lips, and tongue. Despite the variation in some of its characteristics, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid is considered to be a distinct and sharply defined entity. It appears to be the only type of thyroid carcinoma associated with phaeochromocytoma, the only type associated with multiple mucosal neuromas and the only type with a familial incidence. These findings emphasize the validity of its separation from other types of thyroid carcinoma.

Although inhaled corticosteroids have been recommended, there are no published reports of triamcinolone acetonide therapy for asthma during pregnancy. The objective of this study was to report our experience with triamcinolone acetonide during pregnancy. This was a retrospective cohort study in a tertiary care urban hospital. We compared birth weights and the proportion of subjects hospitalized for asthma exacerbations among pregnant women receiving inhaled triamcinolone acetonide, inhaled beclomethasone dipropionate, and oral theophylline. The mean triamcinolone acetonide group (n = 15) birth weight was 502 g more than the beclomethasone group (n = 14) and 316 g more than the theophylline group (n = 25); however, these differences were not statistically significantly. Fewer patients treated with triamcinolone acetonide (n = 5, 33%) required hospital admissions for asthma exacerbations compared to those treated with beclomethasone (n = 11, 79%; P < 0.05) but not theophylline (n = 7, 28%; P = NS). Our preliminary data suggest that triamcinolone acetonide appears to be at least as efficacious for the treatment of asthma during pregnancy as is beclomethasone. These results should be confirmed by a clinical trial to further evaluate the safety and efficacy of inhaled triamcinolone acetonide during pregnancy.
The grass stage is an inherent and distinctive developmental trait of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), in which height growth in the first few years after germination is suppressed. In operational forestry practice the grass stage extends for two to several years and often plays a role in planting failures and decisions to plant alternative species. Interspecies hybrids involving loblolly (P. taeda) and slash (P. elliottii var. elliottii) pines have been investigated as a means to produce planting stock with improved early height growth and to develop backcross populations for advanced generation breeding. We have reevaluated data from several interspecies populations, with the objective of estimating the number of genes contributing to the difference in first-year height growth between longleaf and loblolly pines. Estimates based on means and variances of parental and interspecies hybrid and backcross families suggest a minimum of 4 to 10 genes with standard errors less than half the estimates. These results suggest that the grass stage has evolved through the accumulation of alleles at several loci, each with small effects on various components of first-year height growth. Given the complexity of the grass-stage trait, tree breeders may need to combine genetic marker analysis with recurrent backcross breeding to efficiently develop longleaf pine planting stock for improved reforestation.
