Arterial compliance (C) has been measured in 18 children known to have had a single umbilical artery at birth. Non-invasive ultrasonic Doppler techniques were used to measure C for the aorta, iliac, and leg arteries. Anomalous compliance was found between the two iliac vessels, and it is suggested that this is the result of haemodynamic stress-induced changes during development. The demonstration that the form of large arteries may be changed by altered haemodynamic stress and that their physiological function is thus affected, may have important implications in the pathogenesis of degenerative disease.

The static mechanical properties of the aorta have been examined in rats, aged between 4 weeks and 2 years. Internal radius, relative wall thickness, circumferential incremental strain, and circumferential incremental elastic modulus have been measured at pressures between 1.33 and 33.3 kPa (10 and 250 mm Hg). The results show that the value of the incremental elastic modulus does not change after 12 weeks. Changes observed in younger animals are related to alterations in relative wall thickness. The findings correlate with previously observed chemical and morphological changes. Studies of muscle function indicate that the smooth muscle of the media does not contribute significantly to the static elastic properties of the vessel wall.

Examination of 27 hearts from patients treated by streptokinase following myocardial infarction showed one major histopathological difference from controls, the presence of massive interstitial haemorrhage into the necrotic tissue in some cases. This change is presumably related to the re-establishment of the circulation to infarcted areas.
