[Demonstration of gonadotropic cells in the adenohypophysis (pars distalis and pars tuberalis) of the monkey Macacus irus. Immunofluorescence study using human anti-beta-FSH and ovine anti-beta-LH antibodies].

Indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti-beta FSH and anti-beta oLH antisera has allowed us to detect "gonadotropic cells" in the pars distalis and in the pars tuberalis of the adenohypophysis of the monkey Macacus irus. In the pars distalis, 85-90 % of the "gonadotropic cells" react simultaneously with these two antisera ; 10-15 % of these cells react only either with anti-beta hFSH or anti-beta oLH antisera. The gonadotropic cells are dispersed in the whole pars distalis, amid the other cellular types ; indeed, in the female, there is a "gonadotropic zone" in the median zone of the lateral lobes of the gland. In the pars tuberalis, we have observed "gonadotropic cells" which react only with anti-beta oLH antiserum. These results are compared with observations of some authors.

[Immunohistochemical study of adenohypophysis cells reacting with antibodies against peptides of the opiocortine group in rock squirrels (Citellus variegatus Erxleben)].

Indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti-1-24ACTH, anti-17-39ACTH, anti-alpha and anti-beta endorphins, anti-beta LPH sera has allowed us to detect a cellular type in the anterior lobe of the Rock squirrel (Citellus variegatus) which react simultaneously with these five antisera. These cells are localized in the whole pars distalis and appeared either in clusters or dispersed; immunoreactive cells are regularly disposed along the pituitary cleft. Some cells of the intermediate lobe react with anti-1-24ACTH, anti-17-39ACTH and anti-beta LPH antisera, but not all these cells react with anti-endorphins antisera.

[Demonstration by immunofluorescence of somatostatin cells in the islets of Langerhans in 3 species of monkeys].

Indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti-somatostatin serum has allowed us to detect somatostatin containing cells in the Langerhans' islets of three species of monkeys (Macacus irus, Papio hamadryas, Cercopithecus aethiops). These cells are in close relationship with another cells, but occupy a more central position in the islets. Thus, the distribution of somatostatin-containing cells in the monkey's endocrine pancreas has not a similar pattern as in rodent's pancreas; they have a comparable topography as in the human islets but these cells are always more elongated than in the human islets. Only slight morphological differences are observed in the three species of monkeys.

[Immunofluorescence demonstration of somatostatin-containing cells in the digestive tract of the monkeys irus, Macaca Papio hamadryas and Cercopithecus aethiops].

Indirect immunofluorescence technique with antisomatostatin serum has allowed us to detect somatostatin containing cells in the gastro-intestinal tract of three species of monkeys : Macacus irus, Papio hamadryas and Cercopithecus aethiops. These cells are localized only in the stomach, in the duodenum, and in the jejunum-ileum. No somatostatin cells were encountered in the esophagus and in the colon. The maximum of somatostatin positive cells is localized in the duodenum, as well in the Lieberkühn's glands as in the Brunner's glands. These cells are always separated from each other ; they were found only in glandular epithelium ; no immunopositive cells were observed in the surface epithelium. No morphological or numerical differences were noted between the three species of monkeys.

[Existence of "endorphin cells" in the adenohypophysis of the cat; comparison with "corticotropin cells." Immunocytochemical study].

Indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti-17-39ACTH and anti beta-endorphin sera has allowed us to detect "corticotropic cells" in the anterior and intermediate lobes of the adenohypophysis of the male cat. The corticotropic cells of the anterior lobe are localized in the median zone; they are PAS-positive and appeared intensively coloured in dark blue with the Herlant's tetrachrome. All the cells of the intermediate lobe react with the anti-17-39ACTH serum. Using an anti-beta-endorphin serum, we have observed that all the corticotropic cells of the anterior lobe react; but in the intermediate lobe, only a part of "corticotropic cells" react with the anti-beta-endorphin serum.

[Immunohistochemical study of the adenohypophysis of the monkey Macaca irus with the use of antibodies anti 1-24-ACTH, anti 17-39-ACTH, anti alpha-and beta-endorphins, anti beta-LPM].

Indirect immunofluorescence technique with anti1-24- and anti17-39 ACTH, anti alpha- and anti beta-endorphins, anti beta-LPH sera has allowed us to detect a cellular type in the anterior lobe of the hypophysis of Macacus irus which react simultaneously with these five antisera. These cells are especially localized in the ventro-medial zone, but there are also present in the pars distalis, under the glandular capsule, and in the lateral lobes, amid the other cellular types. The cells of the intermediate lobe react on the whole with anti1-24-, these antisera are also immunoreactive with the anti alpha- and anti17-39ACTH and anti beta-LPH ; SOME CELLS, WHich react with anti beta-endorphin antisera. The adenohypophysis of Macacus irus contains therefore two categories of cells reacting with the above mentioned antisera : one of this type, localized in the anterior lobe and in the intermediate lobe, react simultaneously with the five antisera, the other type, localized only in the intermediate lobe does not react with the antiendorphins antisera.

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone↗

[Demonstration by immunofluorescence of adenohyphysis corticotropin and melanotropin cells in Erythrocebus patas, Cercopithecus aethiops and Papio hamadryas].

Using antibodies against synthetic corticotropic hormones (1-24 ACTH and 17-39 ACTH), and melanotropic hormones (alpha-MSH and beta-MSH), it is possible to identify corticotropic and melanotropic cells in the adenohypophysis of three species of monkeys : Erythrocebus patas, Cercopithecus aethiops and Papio hamadryas. The corticotropic cells are numerous in the anterior lobe in both the adult and infant male and female monkeys of these three species. The intermediate lobe reacts with antibodies against ACTH and also with antibodies against the two MSH. In the anterior lobe, the corticotropic cells react also with anti-beta MSH antibody but not with the anti-alpha MSH antibody.

[Contribution of immunohistochemistry to the cytological study of the adenohypophysis].

In the first chapter, the initial studies using immuno-histochemical methods for the cytological analysis of the adenohypophysis are presented; the different trends of the actual groups of research workers are summarized. In the second chapter are described, with details utillsation, some ser viceable techniques for experimental or anatomo-pathological studies of the pituitary gland; immunization of animals against hypophysial hormones, application to the study of the hypophysis (conditions of fixation, analysis of the subsequent times of histological techniques, immunohistochemical reactions [immuno-fluorescence and immuno-enzymatic reactions], controls of these reactions, applications on semi-thin and ultra-thin sections). In the third charpter are studied the results of this immunohistochemical analysis of the mammalian hypophysis: description of different cell types first in the anterior lobe then in the intermediate lobe; these observations are discussed. A special subdivision concerns the study of the human pituitary gland in normal and pathological conditions, in adults and foetuses. In the fourth chapter the results obtained in the study of the adenohypophysis of non mammalian Vertebrates: Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, and Birds, are grouped. An extensive bibliography concludes this review (references until 1977). Illustrations, furnished by several french workers, are adapted to the different descriptions.

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone↗

Immunofluorescent identification of somatotropic and prolactin cells in the anterior lobe of the hypophysis (pars distalis) of the monkey,Macacus irus.

Using antibodies against human growth hormone and ovine prolactine,it is possible to identify somatotropic and prolactin cells in the anterior lobe of the hypophysis (pars distalis) of the monkey, Macacus irus. These cells are present in both adult and infant male and female monkeys. The density of the somatotropic cells is greater at the periphery of the anterior lobe. Prolactin cells are of two types: one type is dispersed throughout the pars distalis and consists of small and large cells, the other type forms clusters of large cells.

[Demonstration by immunofluorescence of somatotropic cells and prolactin cells in the monkeys Erythrocebus patas, Cercopithecus aethiops and Papio hamadryas].

Using antibodies against human STH and ovine prolactine, it is possible to identify somatotropic and prolactin cells in the pituitary anterior lobe of three species of monkeys: Erythrocebus patas, Cercopithecus aethiops and Papio hamadryas. The somatotropic cells are numerous in both adult and infant male or female monkeys, especially in the lateral lobes of the pituitary gland. The prolactin cells can be distinguished in all pituitaries studied, regardless age or sex; indeed there are more numerous in adult females. The immunofluorescent technique reveals a more great number of cells of somatotropic and prolactin type than the classical tetrachrome technique.

[Description of the folliculo-stellate cells in the anterior hypophysis of the monkey Macacus irus].

Folliculo-stellar cells are present in the anterior lobe of hypophysis of the monkey Macacus irus. These cells limit strait cavities in which one can observe microvillosites at the apical pole of the cells. The folliculo-stellar cells possess long and thin fibers which insert themselves between different types of granular cells and sometimes extend to the peri-capillar regions. Numerous organelles are present in these folliculo-stellar cells, especially microfilaments.

[Optical microscopic study of the effect of the hypothalamic hormone T.R.H. on certain cell types of rat anterior hypophysis].

A cytological and optical microscopic study of the anterior lobe of hypohysis in the Wistar adult rat 10, 30 or 60 minutes after intravenous injection of 50 mug of synthetic TRH discloses modifications of thyrotropic cells and prolactin cells. It's possible to recognize a quick degranulation of the prolactin cells (with a maximum at the 10th minute) and a slower degranulation of the thyrotropic cells (perceptible at the 10th minute and very pronounced at the 60th minute). The somatrotopic cells did not show any modification.

[Folliculo-stellate cells of the anterior hypophyses of the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus L.)].

The anterior lobe of the hedgehog pituitary possess folliculo-stellate cells. These agranular (or few granular) cells, connected together by juctional complexes in relation with mitochondria, limit small cavities; at the luminar surfaces, microvillosities projecting in the lumen are seen. The lumina of cavities contain, or not, an electron dense substance, but not remnants of glandular cells. Long slender cytoplasmic processes, extended between adjacent granular cells, takes contact with the basement parenchymatous membrane, where they form a so-called "vascular foot". The cytoplasm of these cells contains a variety of organelles; their development is variable and appears in relation with the functional activity of the cell.
