The described heart catheterization technique with the Swan-Ganz-flow-directed catheter allows the catheterization of the aorta or, in transposition of the great arteries, the pulmonary artery, from the left ventricle via a venous entrance form the saphenous vein if an interatrial connection exists (patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defect). With the help of a stiff steel guide wire rail it is possible in the apex of the left ventricle to bend the catheter sharply toward the outflow tract. This technique was used on 51 children. Every catheterization attempt was successful . It is possible by avoiding the retrograde arterial catheter technique carry out to the complete examination of the left heart and the great artery via a venous entrance.

The main compounds of lipophilic extracts of flower heads of marigold (Calendula officinalis L.) are triterpendiol esters, mainly faradiol laurate, faradiol myristate and faradiol palmitate. These faradiol-3-O-monoesters have been quantified for the first time by means of reversed phase HPLC with internal standardisation in different parts of C. officinalis plants, namely ray florets, disk florests, involucral bracts, receptacles, levaes and seeds. The amounts of the esters were highest in ray florets, approximately 10 times lower in disk florets than in the ray florets, and approximately 10 times lower in involucral bracts than in the disk florets. In the leaves only traces of the esters could be detected, and in the receptacles no esters could be detected at all. Quantification in the seed was not possible using this method because of interfering fatty compounds. Concerning the faradiol esters, the dried ray and disk florets only should be preferred as primary products for remedies as demanded in the recently published supplement of the Pharmacopoiea Europaea (1999). Breeding work should focus on varieties with a greater number of ray florets in order to improve the quality of herbal medicinal products derived from marigoid.
Chromatin stability and DNA-resistance to acidic denaturation was evaluated by acidic aniline blue and acridine orange staining of cat sperm from different regions of the epididymis. The results were related to conventional sperm parameters. The percentage of aniline blue-stained spermatozoa (persisting histones) decreased significantly from the caput to the cauda region (31.8% and 7.8%, respectively; P<0.0001). The percentage of stained heads of cauda sperm was much lower in populations of morphologically normal forms than in those with abnormal forms (4.1% and 13.8%, respectively, P<0.0001). Among spermatozoa with abnormalities, the percentage of stained heads was significantly higher in cells with head abnormalities than in sperm with only tail abnormalities (87.1% and 10.3%, respectively; P>0.0001). With acridine orange fluorescence staining, 86.5% of cauda epididymal region (51.1%) to the cauda epididymal region (86.5%). The percentage of cauda epididymal sperm with normal condensed chromatin was neither linked to testicular sperm count, motility nor to age of the cats. The parameter of chromatin condensation and stability can be a valuable index of sperm quality, reflecting the possible disorders of spermatogenesis and epididymal sperm maturation, frequently observed in feline species.
