The immune system.

This inservice describes the basic components and actions of the immune system, whose activity is necessary for the body to protect itself against invasions of infectious diseases, parasites, cancers, viruses and more. When one reads about such diseases and how they break down the body's defenses, specific references are made to the immune system. For a better understanding of the diseases confronting us in today's healthcare environment, one needs to become familiar with the immune system.

Projecting a professional image: how to put your best foot forward.

Projecting a professional image is important to those who value their careers. It is a major part of corporate image, and therefore important to the organization. Professional image can be enhanced by dressing and grooming appropriately, and by developing a positive self-image and strong group image. These activities will ultimately create a stronger organizational image, which is vital to its longevity. "If hospital 'A' presents a warm, friendly, and exquisitely polished ... image and hospital 'B' presents a frumpy, unkempt, and irritable ... image, and both are otherwise similar, which would you choose?" Given that professional image is self-controlled, can anyone afford not to build a more positive image?

What is "right to know"? Reviewing the Hazard Communication Standard.

The Hazard Communication Standard and its many components were revised in 1987 to include healthcare institutions, and enacted to protect employees and ensure a safer environment. "Compliance with the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) will enable hospital managers (to) learn more about the types of hazardous materials they use and will allow hospital employees to work with them more safely." According to OSHA, regulations on hazardous chemicals will reduce the risks of exposure to hazardous chemicals for millions of employees and potentially save hundreds of lives. While compliance may be costly in terms of dollars, employees will have fewer work-related illnesses attributable to hazardous chemical exposure. As employees and the environment are better protected from the threat of hazardous chemical exposure, the purpose of the Hazard Communication Standard is served.

Consistent use of proper wrapping techniques is an important part of the responsibilities of materiel management employees. Sterility of supplies is dependent upon using the correct procedure for each part of the sterilization process. In order for materiel management to meet the objective of providing sterile products for patient care, attention to detail must include appropriate wrapping techniques.

The disabled in the workforce.

This inservice is an introduction to some aspects of working with disabled employees. Basic information is provided with regard to who is considered disabled, how supervisors and co-workers can make the work experience most productive, and what resources are available. Supplemental literature and audiovisuals from various sources which promote an understanding of the disabled among other employees should be available as reference. The inservice lasts approximately 30 minutes.
