Crosstraining.

The small, rural hospitals have effectively crosstrained employees in multiple job skills for years. The large institutions can learn this useful and successful methodology from the small hospitals. A well-established crosstraining program can effectively build a versatile, multi-skilled staff, which can be utilized to meet the unpredictable demands on materiel management and other support services. It is an effective tool to reducing training costs and salary expenses and to improving performance, self-esteem and job security. It could very well be one of the keys to surviving in the 1990s.

Exchange carts. What and why.

It is important for every materiel management employee to be trained to know the purpose, benefits and operations of the exchange cart system. This information can be shared in a simple, short inservice or during department orientation. It is vital to the success of the system. To summarize one expert's views on this training. "No system will work without people. The people must be trained to believe in the system, to understand the system, and to work within the system. Certainly the policies and procedures must be there to provide the guidelines for day-to-day operations. Certainly there should be some quantitative analysis in order to evaluate the daily results. However, the people will make most systems work or fail."

Employee orientation.

What is so important about orientation? Drucker identifies productive work, feedback information and continuous learning as the three prerequisites required to enable the worker to achieve and take responsibility for his or her job. The provision of these activities are primarily tasks and responsibilities of those in management, although the involvement of the employee is crucial. For new employees to become productive, responsible department members, a structured orientation must be provided for them. The structure for your departmental orientation is set once you have developed the statement of purpose, objectives, content, and a method for evaluation. This structure is needed, regardless of the size of your department, the amount of content to be covered, or the length of orientation. Having these components in place facilitates the orientation process and allows for more consistency as new employees are hired.

Handling hazardous waste.

Hazardous waste management is a concern for every healthcare organization. A system for managing such waste must meet guidelines from various sources and be comprehensive enough to ensure the safety of the institution's employees and guests, and of the community. An integral part of a hazardous waste management system is employee training. "Employees must be trained to make use of the information that will be available to them. This includes knowing the hazards of the materials they use, how to use the appropriate protective clothing and equipment, what steps to take if there is an accidental release or over-exposure..." and much more. The institution's success in managing hazardous wastes and maintaining a safe environment will depend on the adequacy of its employee training.
