The synthesis of cis and trans isomers of N,N-N-trimethyl-2-phenoxycyclohexylammonium bromide, cis-N,N,-N-trimethyl-2(2',6'-xylyloxy)cyclohexylammonium bromide, and N,N-dimethyl-3-phenoxypiperidinium bromide is described. Their structures and conformations were determined by NMR and uv absorption spectroscopy, the minimum torsional angles about the aryl-oxygen gond geing 20, 20, 80, and 27 degrees, respectively. Since the piperidinium compound stimulates ganglia, it is concluded the either planarity of the aryl--O--C system is not essential for this type of activity or receptor interaction can involve appreciable bond distortion. The absence of ganglion-stimulant activity in the remaining compounds indicates the need for a transoid arrangement of the O--C--C--N+ system.

The extracellular sulfated glycosaminoglycans synthesized by explants of rabbit cornea and sclera, and by confluent cultures of corneal fibroblasts after incubation in medium containing 35S-sulfate were compared. The glycosaminoglycans isolated from corneal explants differed considerably from those obtained from confluent corneal fibroblast cultures and scleral explants. Only the corneal explants secreted into the nutrient medium a population of enzyme-resistant 35S-sulfate-labeled glycosaminoglycan that eluted from Dowex 1-X2 (Cl-) at a 3 M sodium chloride concentration, and which was resistant to testicular hyaluronidase, chondroitinase ABC, and nitrous acid degradation. With time, corneal explants gradually synthesized less of this fraction with these attributes of keratosulfate. If the corneal epithelium and endothelium remained on the corneal explants the total incorporated 35S-sulfate was approximately double that obtained when the cornea was striped of these cells.
The problem of the varus hindfoot in children ages six to 10 has been discussed. A preliminary follow-up is presented on six patients treated by extensive medial release, multiple tendon lengthenings, and subtalar intra-articular arthrodesis. Two of our patients revealed incomplete correction of the deformity because of technical errors in the medial release. However, there have been no failures of fusion and no progression of the deformity to date. This is a preliminary report and further follow-up is indicated. It should be noted that we have now extended our series to 40 patients.
In 27 children and young adults with hemophilia presenting acutely painful distended intra-articular hemorrhages of the knee, aspiration was carried out and the patients were followed for a minimum of 24 months. Seventeen patients with classical hemophilia were found to have less than 1 percent of normal plasmal level of antihemophilic factor (AHF). Of the remainder, five were Factor IX, plasma thromboplastin component (PTG), deficient, whereas two patients had Von Willebrand's disease. Aspiration was routinely done in an outpatient clinic, followed by immediate discharge with return to regular activity levels within 48 hours. There were no infections nor rehemorrhages attributable to aspiration technique.
