Gastric myoelectrical and mechanical activity was recorded in miniature pigs using chronically implanted electrodes and strain gauge force transducers. Semiautomated methods were devised to obtain quantitative evaluations of the electrical and mechanical parameters measured in fasted and fed animals. The patterns of gastric myoelectrical activity in pigs were, on the whole, similar to the patterns described in dogs, including regular cyclic control activity and spike response activity associated with muscle contraction. However, several points were peculiar to the species studied: conduction velocity of pacesetter potentials increased only moderately in the antrum; tachygastria never occurred in the experiments; in response to a standard meal, the frequency of pacesetter potentials gradually increased; mechanical activity proceeded at its maximal force immediately after feeding and for a long period; no evidence of 'migrating electrical complexes' was found in the stomach during fasting. The 40-min period following administration of a test meal appeared especially suitable for pharmacological or physiological experiments in which inhibitory factors are to be tested on the stomach.

Two types of pancreatic fistulas were directly compared in Wistar rats, to define more accurately the differences between collecting pancreatic juice under anesthesia (acute fistula) and in awake restrained animals (chronic fistula). Basal outputs of water, bicarbonate and total protein were about then times larger in chronic than in acute animals; they could be larger than the maximal secretory rate in anaesthetized rats. As a corollary, the chronic preparation was less sensitive to ecbolic and hydrelatic stimulations, with respect to basal levels. It is concluded that chronic fistula rats display a highly stimulated state of pancreatic secretion, probably due to the potentiation of several neurohumoral factors. Whatever this stimulation originates from, it renders the model less suitable for studies on ancreatic stimulating agents. On the contrary, anaesthetized rats displayed a low secretion more responsive to stimulating agents.

The regenerating rat liver after partial hepatectomy was used as a model to study the effects of an hypolipidaemic drugs, tiadenol (bis hydroxyethylthio 1--10 decane). Seven days after partial hepatectomy, liver weight, DNA, RNA, total protein and cytochrome P-450 were increased in tiadenol treated rats, relative to hepatectomized controls. Tiadenol displaying similar effects on the intact liver, it is concluded that this hypolipidaemic drug maintains its hepatomegalic action on the regenerating rat liver.

In a patient with an adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon, the jejunal central villous lymphatics were dilated and contained tumour cells. This case, apparently the only one of its type, demonstrates the proof of a phenomenon sometimes described in connection with malignant diseases, but rarely proven; that of the dissemination of tumour cells by reversal of lymphatic flow.
The authors report 4 cases of encapsulating peri-hepatitis, including an angiographic study. Selective arteriography of the coeliac trunk showed extremely sinuous intra-hepatic arteries in 3 of these cases, and obstruction of the portal vein, in one case. Catheterisation of the hepatic veins showed a pressure gradient between the obstructed hepatic vein and the free supra-hepatic pressure, showing a post-sinusoidal block. In 2 of the 4 cases, ascites was chylous. Lymphography carried out via lymphatics in the foot was negative in 3 cases where it was carried out. One case showed, on two successive laparoscopies, that micro-nodular cirrhosis was present before the development of encapsulating peri-hepatitis.
A diet containing citrates increased bile salts and phospholipids concentration in the rats' bile, while a diet containing a hypolipemic factor (tiadenol) decreased cholesterol. No potentiation was obtained when the diet contained both factors.
