In a 60-year-old woman with an inoperable vipoma, satisfactory improvement of severe watery diarrhea was obtained over a 12-month period by subcutaneous administration of the somatostatin analogue SMS 201-995. It is suggested that SMS 201-995 may be useful in such inoperable cases, or when surgery would carry a high risk.

These experiments demonstrate for the first time the existence of a Type II progesterone receptor (RpII) in MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. RpII was shown to have a lower affinity for tritiated progesterone ([3H]Pg) (Kd greater than or equal to 13 nM) than classical Rp (Kd less than or equal to 3 nM). RpII was detected by cytosolic, nuclear, and whole cell assays of MCF-7 cells. Scatchard analysis of [3H]Pg binding data revealed that classical Rp but not RpII could be recompartmentalized from the cytosolic to the nuclear pool by treating cells 1 h at 37 degrees C with 1 microM Pg. RpII levels were shown to be increased more than two-fold by growing MCF-7 cells for 4 days in 10 nM estradiol (E2) plus 100 nM Pg when compared to either untreated cells or to cells treated with only E2.
Since antiquity, clinicians have observed that maggots can provide debridement of necrotic wounds, but the therapeutic use has declined since the advent of aseptic wound management and antibiotics. In certain difficult wounds, the use of maggots for debridement may have a role. If so, the larvae must be prepared prospectively to control the bacterial population of the insect's intestinal tract and integument. The mechanism of wound debridement by maggots includes the secretion of proteolytic enzymes and antibacterial substances. A case of infestation of a necrotic wound in a patient with cancer of the head and neck is presented including the entomological identification and description of the maggots.
An unusual manifestation of the disease Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LHC) is presented. An 18-year-old man was admitted to the Department of Dermatology after he had been suffering for some time from affections of the skin in the scalp and perianal region which were resistant to treatment. Shortly after LHC was diagnosed, he developed spontaneous bilateral pneumothorax. In his past life he had been without cardiopulmonary complaints. In addition to this, he developed a diabetes insipidus, originating in connexion with the present disease. The combination of skin affection in the perianal region, spontaneous bilateral pneumothorax and diabetes insipidus in relation to LHC has not been described previously.

A 20-year-old woman with a transient diabetes insipidus as a complication to meningococcal meningitis is presented. This condition has only been described once before. Culture of blood and spinal fluid yielded Neisseria meningitidis group B, sensitive to penicillin. The diabetes insipidus arose on day 4 after admission and continued to day 15. Treatment comprised benzylpenicillin, DIC therapy, assisted ventilation, and vasopressin.
A malformation association comprising bilateral atypical macular coloboma, familial juvenile nephronophthisis and mesomelic skeletal dysplasia of upper limbs with bilateral radiohumeral fusion is reported in two sisters. The association seems to represent a new, probably autosomal recessive, oculo-reno-skeletal syndrome.

RL-95, a moderately well-differentiated adenosquamous endometrial carcinoma cell line, can be used as a model for testing chemotherapeutic agents in vitro. Cells are grown in T-75 flasks, transferred to scintillation vials, and grown for 24 hr. Following this, medium is removed and new medium containing Adriamycin (Adr) and cis-platinum (CP) is added. Effects of the two drugs are measured by cell counts and DNA synthesis. To measure DNA synthesis, cells are incubated with [3H]thymidine (3H-THY) for up to 24 hr. Decreased DNA synthesis is reflected in decreased 3H-THY uptake. Cell kill is obtained with levels of drugs that are clinically achievable. Evidence is presented for increased cytotoxicity with concomitant, rather than sequential, chemotherapy. Results are also confirmed by testing the agent on MCF-7, a well-known breast cancer cell line. The results indicate that (1) endometrial carcinoma responds to Adriamycin and cis-platinum chemotherapeutic agents in vitro, and (2) RL-95 can be used as a model for testing varying concentrations, time of exposure, and combinations of chemotherapeutic agents.

Ten young women were tested with an ERP paradigm that used the words 'left,' 'right,' 'LEFT,' 'RIGHT' as stimuli. The stimulus sequence was presented as several separate runs with varying response instructions. Subjects were instructed to respond according to the meaning of the stimulus in the (WORD task), to the case in which the stimulus was written (CASE task), or to both the case and meaning of the stimulus (CASE/WORD) task. In each task, half the trials called for a response that was incompatible with the stimulus. For the WORD task, compatible and incompatible trials were presented as separate blocks of trials. For all 3 tasks an additional stimulus sequence was presented in which the words were degraded with superimposed visual random noise. Reaction time (RT) in the CASE/WORD task was more than 100 msec later than in the other tasks. In the WORD and CASE/WORD tasks, RT was delayed more than 100 msec when the response was incompatible with the stimulus. Degrading the stimulus additionally delayed RT by about 100 msec. In the WORD and CASE tasks, error RTs were earlier than correct RTs. P3 latency was measured with a single-trial latency adjustment algorithm. P3 latency was delayed in the CASE/WORD task compared to the other 2 tasks. P3 was delayed by degrading the stimuli. Contrary to some previous reports, P3 was delayed by about 70 msec when incompatible responses were required, but only in the WORD task. Taken together with error and RT data, these P3 latency data are consistent with the notion that the task causes subjects to adopt different strategies and hence different types of processing (i.e., serial vs. parallel). Depending on the type of processing, P3 may appear to be affected by response incompatibility.
A case of malignant melanocytic schwannoma in the lumbar region is presented. The patient, a 55-year-old man, stated that the tumour had been present for 40 years before it started to enlarge. The tumour was identical with cellular blue naevus, which very rarely undergoes malignant transformation, as described in this case.
