Incidence and clinicopathological studies on rhinosporidiosis in Tamil Nadu.

A clinicopathological study on 83 cases of rhinosporidiosis attended at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital during 1979 to 1984 from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu revealed its endemicity. The season has no apparent influence on the incidence probably due to chronicity of the disease. The incidence was mostly seen in 11-30 years age group (57/83). Males were predominantly affected (60/83). Temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, bleeding and clotting times were within the normal range. Urinalysis revealed no abnormal constituents. Haematological examination revealed that the haemoglobin level was below normal ranges (males-8.58 g/dl; females-7.71 g/dl). Though the total leucocyte counts were found to be normal the differential count showed a slight monocytosis (males-8.39%, females-9.17%).

Epidemiological survey of rhinosporidiosis in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu.

One hundred and twelve nasal polyps received along with full history from three different hospitals of Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu during the period 1983-1987 were found positive for rhinosporidiosis on histopathological examination. Among the four taluks (countries) the majority of the cases (41.1 per cent) came from Agastheeswaram, followed by Kalkulam (28.6 per cent), Thovalai (17.0 per cent) and Vilavancode (13.3 per cent). The 11-20 years age group found to be highly susceptible (60 per cent). There was no sex prepondence in contracting the disease as the cases were evenly distributed between both sexes. These findings exhibited the endemic nature of the disease in Kanyakumari district. Unreported cases to an extent of 9 to 40 per cent were encountered during the ENT disease diagnostic camps conducted in nine high incidence villages. Further 8 more cases were detected in addition to cases attended in the hospitals and ENT camps when a complete enumeration of cases was undertaken in Pallam village. Thus the actual number of cases found in the district need a stratified random sampling.

Influence of dietary aflatoxin on certain serum enzyme levels in broiler chickens.

Experimental aflatoxicosis was produced in 'Cobb' broiler chickens by feeding them with dietary aflatoxin at concentrations of 1 and 3 ppm for a period of four weeks from 0 to 28 days. Twelve birds in triplicate were used for each treatment of which three from each replicate were sacrificed at weekly intervals for enzymatic estimations of SGPT, SGOT, Serum amylase and serum lipase. Thus each treatment contained nine weekly observations and 36 observations in total. The SGPT activity was not found in appreciable amounts either in control or in toxin treated birds. However, the SGOT levels were in measurable amounts and elevated levels were observed in toxin treated birds from first week onwards at both levels of toxin and was dose related. The treatment means of SGOT differed significantly (P less than 0.05). The serum lipase levels increased from first week onwards and the treatment means showed significant difference (P less than 0.01). Serum lipase changes in toxin treated birds occurred to about the same extent. But the serum amylase levels decreased from first week onwards and their treatment means differed significantly (P less than 0.01) at both levels of toxin treated birds. Serum amylase concentrations decreased as the aflatoxin level increased in the diet.

Rhinosporidiosis in bovines of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, India.

A survey on rhinosporidiosis in animals was conducted in Kanyakumari (K.K.) district of Tamil Nadu, India. Among 103 animals (40 bullocks, 45 cows, 15 heifers, 2 bulls and a buffalo), 19 (9 bullocks, 8 cows, 1 heifer and a she-buffalo) were found to be infected with Rhinosporidium seeberi. The study revealed the endemic nature of the disease in bovines of K.K. district. Agastheeswaram taluk contributed 52.6 per cent of positive cases followed by Kalkulam (26.2 per cent). The disease was also found in exotic cattle (1 Holstein Friesien (HF) cow, 1 Swiss Brown cow and 1 HF heifer). The rest 16 were indigenous non-descript cattle. There was no sex variance as the cases were evenly distributed between both sexes. One of the infected animals was a she-buffalo. A case of recurrence of growth was observed in a bullock. Another bullock had concurrent infection of both rhinosporidiosis and nasal schistosomiasis. All the animals were adults and aged except the heifer. All were nose-roped. Cows were stall fed but bathed in ponds.

Influence of dietary rice culture material containing cyclopiazonic acid on certain serum biochemical parameters of broiler chickens.

Three hundred and forty-eight Vencob broiler chickens were fed diets containing Penicillium griseofulvum rice culture material with 0, 12.5, 25 and 50 ppm of the mycotoxin cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) for 28 days. Serum samples were collected from 9 birds in each group at weekly intervals to study the effect of sublethal doses of CPA on certain serum biochemical parameters. Significant reductions in weight gains (p < 0.01) and feed consumptions (p < 0.05) were observed at 25 and 50 ppm. Exocrine pancreas showed degenerative and necrotic changes in CPA fed chickens. The CPA had significant (p < 0.05) influence on serum total protein, albumin, cholesterol, amylase and lipase levels. CPA did not affect serum glucose levels. There was a decline in levels of total serum protein and albumin in CPA fed groups. But serum cholesterol, amylase and lipase showed dose-dependent increases.

Lichen amyloidosus: a study of clinical, histopathologic and immunofluorescence findings in 30 cases.

BACKGROUND: Lichen amyloidosus (LA) is a primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis characterized clinically by discrete hyperkeratotic hyperpigmented papules and histologically by deposition of amyloid material in previously normal skin without any evidence of visceral involvement. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to study the etiology, clinical features, histopathology and direct immunofluorescence findings in LA. METHODS: A prospective study of 30 patients with clinical, histological and immunofluorescence findings suggestive of LA was undertaken. After a detailed history and clinical examination, two punch biopsies for histopathology and immunofluorescence were taken. RESULTS: Of the 30 patients, 19 (63.3%) were males and 11 (36.7%) were females with duration of LA ranging from 6-20 months. Pruritus was the presenting symptom in 27 (90%) patients. Shin was involved in 26 (86.7%) followed by arms in three (10%) and back in one (3.3%). Seventeen patients (56%) had used scrubs for more than 2 years. Histopathology, direct immunofluorescence and Congo red staining detected amyloid in all cases. CONCLUSIONS: LA commonly presents over the shins as pruritic discrete hyperpigmented papules. Familial predisposition and friction may have a pathogenic role. Histopathological examination is very useful in the detection of amyloid which may be supplemented with direct immunofluorescence and Congo red staining.

Clinical profile of forefoot eczema: a study of 42 cases.

BACKGROUND: Forefoot eczema (FE) is characterized by dry fissured dermatitis of the plantar surface of the feet. AIM: To study the clinical profile of FE and the possible etiological factors. METHODS: Forty-two patients with FE were included in the study. A detailed history was recorded and examination done. Fungal scrapings and patch test with Indian Standard Series (ISS) were performed in all patients. RESULTS: The most common site affected was the plantar surface of the great toe in 16 (38.09%) patients. Hand involvement, with fissuring and soreness of the fingertips and palm, was seen in four patients (9.5%). Seven patients (16.6%) had a personal history of atopy whereas family history of atopy was present in six (14.2%). Seven patients (16.6%) reported aggravation of itching with plastic, rubber or leather footwear, and 13 (30.9%), with detergents and prolonged contact with water. Negative fungal scrapings in all patients ruled out a dermatophyte infection. Patch testing with ISS was performed in 19 patients and was positive in five. CONCLUSIONS: FE is a distinctive dermatosis of the second and third decade, predominantly in females, with a multifactorial etiology, possible factors being chronic irritation, atopy, footwear and seasonal influence.
