Impact of beta-carotene supplementation through red palm.

A 10-month long feeding trial was conducted to assess the impact of beta-carotene supplementation through red palm oil (RPO) with the focus on vitamin A status, morbidity status and acceptability of an RPO-incorporated noon-meal as a dietary supplement among two cohorts of 409 (experimental) and 346 (control) preschool children in two southern districts of rural Tamil Nadu, selected by stratified random sampling. Information was gathered on ocular symptoms of vitamin A deficiency and anthropometry, and blood samples were drawn at baseline and final rounds for estimation of serum beta-carotene, retinol and tocopherol. Data about Socioeconomic Status (SES) were collected once during the study period, while information on attendance, consumption and morbidity was recorded by preschool teachers. The results showed the following. 1. Significant improvement in the vitamin A status of children in terms of disappearance of Bitot's spots (50.0 per cent) in the experimental group vs. 28.0 per cent in the control group. 2. After feeding of RPO, incidence rate of new Bitot's spots cases was low at 2.13 in the experimental children vs. 4.78 in control children. 3. Marked improvement in the serum beta-carotene levels after 10 months of feeding. 4. RPO is acceptable to children as an edible grade oil as there is no perceptible difference in the consumption pattern between experimental and control children.

ATP-activated cationic and anionic conductances in cultured rat hippocampal neurons.

The effects of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) on voltage-clamped and dissociated rat hippocampal neurons was investigated. Over 30% of neurons possessed ATP-activated inward currents at a holding potential of -70 mV. The ED50 for these currents was 150 mu M. At this concentration they were blocked by suramin (1 mM), indicating the involvement of P2-purinoceptors. The P2 purinoceptor agonist potency was 2-methylthio ATP > ATP > ADP > alpha,beta-methylene ATP, thus identifying these purinoceptors as belonging to the P2x subclass. The reversal potential for the ATP-activated currents was -45 +/- 8 mV. Ion substitution experiments showed that the permeability ratio for K+/Na+/Cs+/Cl-, was 18:3:2:1, according to the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equation, so that ATP activates cationic and anionic conductances in hippocampal neurons.

Occurrence of cyclopiazonic acid in feeds and feedstuffs in Tamil Nadu, India.

Out of 100 samples (67 randomly collected and 33 known to contain aflatoxin) of feeds and feedstuffs examined, 40 showed cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) activity, i.e., maize 10/26, groundnut cake 10/20, sunflower seed cake 7/10, sorghum 4/10, wheat 1/1, little millet 1/1, rice 1/1, deoiled rice bran 0.1, fishmeal 0/1, chick mash 1/3, grower mash 0/7, layer mash 3/11, broiler mash 2/6 and cattle feed 0/2, concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 12, 0.5 to 20, 0.3 to 20, 0.3 to 20, 20, 10, 10, 1.5, 1 to 15, 8 and 15 ppm, respectively. Co-occurrence of CPA was found in 14 of 33 aflatoxin-containing samples.

Footwear dermatitis.

We conducted a study to determine the prevalence and clinical patterns of footwear dermatitis, patch testing 50 patients with suspected footwear dermatitis and 30 controls with 22 allergens of a shoe series (Chemotechnique Diagnostics AB, Malmö, Sweden). The overall prevalence among contact dermatitis cases was 11.7%. The dorsa of the feet and toes were the commonest sites involved. 70% of patients showed sensitivity to footwear allergen(s), as opposed to 6.67% of controls. Potassium dichromate and colophony were the commonest sensitizers. Other sensitizers were the rubber accelerators 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and diphenylguanidine (DPG) and a dye p-aminoazobenzene. Of the 23 patients patch tested with pieces or scrapings of footwear, only 3 showed positive reactions. We recommend that there should be primary and secondary footwear screening series to detect the responsible allergens, with the ultimate objective of providing correct nonallergenic footwear for our patients, with the help of manufacturers and research institutes.

Rhinosporidium seeberi: light, phase contrast, fluorescent and scanning electron microscopic study.

Phase contrast microscopic study indicated the multilayered structure of the sporangial wall of R. seeberi while the scanning electronmicroscopic study revealed a trilaminated wall compared to a thick double walled light microscopic structure. The scanning electronmicroscopy revealed the spores of varying sizes which were found either discretely or in groups interconnected and seen attached to the inner aspect of the sporangial wall. Autofluorescence of sporangia and spores was observed under microscope. Acridine orange staining revealed the presence of DNA materials in the spore and sporangia.

Ocular rhinosporidiosis in Tamil Nadu, India.

A high incidence of ocular rhinosporidiosis in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India is reported. Among the four taluks (sub-division for administration), highest occurrence was found in Agastheeswaram taluk (51.2%) followed by Kalkulam (24.4%), Thovalai (22%) and Vilavancode (2.4%). The disease occurred among both sexes equally and preponderance of a particular sex was not observed. The young adolescents were found to be more susceptible. The disease was found in all socio-economic strata and among all communities and persons belonging to different religious groups. Most of the patients gave a history of bathing in muddy stagnant pools of water.
