Ion chromatographic determination of sulfites in foods.

Ion chromatography (IC) is shown to be a promising technique for the determination of sulfites (SO2, SO2/3-) in foods. Results of a 10 min flash distillation and 10 min IC determination compare favorably with the results from the conventional Monier-Williams method for total sulfite in a variety of food matrices. The IC technique also provides a wealth of additional information, such as (1) sulfite and sulfate (oxidized sulfite) content of the spiking or treatment solution, (2) residual sulfite applied to the food after oxidation losses in the treatment process, (3) free sulfite in foods, and (4) total sulfite in foods. As a further check on the Monier-Williams method, the sulfate content of the trapping solution can be determined by IC. Because the IC technique traps the liberated SO2 in a non-oxidizing rather than an oxidizing medium, it is considered free from interfering sulfides and organic sulfur-containing groups which can give false positives in the Monier-Williams method. IC thus offers a high speed, more sensitive, and cost-effective alternative to conventional techniques for the determination of sulfite in foods.

Dense mineralized perivascular tubules in osteopetrotic bone.

Samples of osteopetrotic bone were deorganified and examined with the scanning electron microscope. Densely mineralized tubules with walls measuring from 1-10mu in width and with a luminal diameter of 70-90mu were observed scattered throughout the processed surface of the bone. Adjacent sections of bone prepared by routine histological methods for light microscopy showed that the tubules occur in areas of bone where "hyaline" structures are seen surrounding blood vessels. The tubules are not present in normal bone. The nature of these tubules and their possible significance in the pathological physiology of osteopetrosis requires further investigation.

Haversian bone-remodelling rates in the beagle after cessation of exposure to chronic low doses of lead.

This study reports the changes observed in bone-formation dynamics at the cell, tissue and organ level in cortical bone in four standardization research colony-raised male Beagles that were exposed to 0.7 mg of lead acetate per day for 6 months, followed by a 6-month period when no lead acetate was given. Four similar age-sex matched Beagles of the same origin served as controls. Tissue and blood lead levels were measured. Biochemical and hematological analysis were carried out on a monthly basis. Plasma levels of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone were measured. In the absence of any alteration of the dogs' internal milieu, following 6-months exposure to lead there was a decrease in bone formation at the cell (70 percent), tissue (66 percent) and organ (66 percent) levels. Six months after the lead exposure was interrupted, bone formation returned to normal (93 percent at tissue and 100 percent at organ levels), but there was still some depression of activity at the cell level (70 percent). It is not known whether that cell-level depression of activity is due to persistent enzymatic inhibition following the 6-months exposure or whether it is due to the fact that the cell continued to operate in a micro-environment in which tissue levels of lead are elevated, or both.

Comparability of English and Welsh doctor of medicine degrees.

A comparison of the regulations required for the degree of Doctor of Medicine revealed wide variations between different universities, e.g. candidates may not receive much supervision or structured teaching. Universal reform is needed to bring this degree in line with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Market your expertise for the changing future of intravenous therapy.

Redirecting an i.v. team is a progressive approach to interdepartmental and community i.v. needs for the future viability of i.v. therapy. Cut backs and cost justification can be redirected to increase revenue. First the i.v. team should present a proposal to hospital management that includes statistics of i.v. team duties, cost justification by phlebitis and infection, and ways that revenue can be increased. Areas of expertise and needs in the department, hospital or agency, and community must be determined. The possibilities and feasibility of implementation should be researched and prioritized. These possibilities should then be planned, developed, and implemented according to the prioritized list.

MD candidates want better training in research.

A survey of MD candidates in one teaching hospital and two postgraduate institutes was undertaken to determine their initial training needs, and their preferred methods of learning about the conduct of research. Fifty-six respondents (53% response rate) replied to a piloted questionnaire. Their replies indicated a need for intensive initial research training, offered at local level by the supervisor. The supervisor's subsequent role throughout the research period should be to provide ongoing specific critical help and support. It is concluded that teaching materials and designed teaching sessions might be provided for supervisors to assist them in their new role.

Utility of gastric brushing in the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma.

The gastric brushings (GBRs) and endoscopic biopsies obtained concurrently from 27 patients in whom malignant lymphoma was diagnosed or suggested by either modality were assessed to evaluate the utility of cytologic examination in the diagnosis of gastric lymphoma. GBRs provided a definitive diagnosis of lymphoma in 2 (28%) of 7 patients with a prior history of lymphoma and 10 (56%) of 18 patients with primary gastric lymphoma, yielding an overall sensitivity of 48%. All the lymphomas diagnosed cytologically were large cell type. GBRs were suspicious for a malignant neoplasm in four lymphoma patients whose concurrent biopsies were negative. GBRs obtained from two patients who had gastritis were reported as suspicious for lymphoma. There were no false-positive diagnoses.

Will elderly seasonal nomads need health services?

The health care needs of 44 elderly, seasonal migrants to a remote desert town in Arizona were examined in this study. Findings suggest that the convenience sample differed from the general population in that they reported good to excellent health, low utilization of health services during the past year, and high levels of social support from family and friends.
