Eight Chinese herbs of Indigoferae were identified randomly amplified polymorphic DNA by (RAPD) analysis. The results has shown that RAPD analysis is a new and effective method for the identification of Chinese herbs.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term therapeutic results of preoperative chemotherapy for operable breast cancer. METHODS: Patients were divided into preoperative chemotherapy group (group A, 253 cases) and postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy group(group B, 284 cases). The group A patients received preoperative chemotherapy for 4 weeks, followed by radical operation two weeks after chemotherapy. Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy began within 2 weeks after surgery, with the same chemotherapeutic regimen for 6 or more cycles in both groups. RESULTS: (1) The 5-year overall survival rate (OS) and disease-free survival rate(DFS) were 59% and 54.9%, respectively, for group A in stage III, which were higher than those of group B(28.3% and 20.8%, P < 0.05). (2) For group A in stage II and III, the 8-year OS were 81.4% and 46.9%, and DFS were 76.3% and 40.6%, respectively, which were higher than those of group B(OS: 67.4% and 20.7%, DFS: 62.9% and 13.3%, P < 0.05). (3) The 5-year and 8-year OS were higher for group A than those for group B in patients with T3, T4 or positive nodes > or = 4, (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results show that preoperative chemotherapy can improve the short- and long-term survival of patients with operable, stage III breast cancer and long-term survival of patients with stage II breast cancer.
The pharmacological effects of three species of Ootheca Mantidises were compared. The results indicate that Tenodera sinensis can increase the index of testis and thymus gland, and has an antidiuretic effect in mice; Statilia maculate can prolong the swimming time and ordinary pressing anoxia, increase the index of spleen and thymus gland, raise the temperature in mice, decrease the content of LPO in liver of the hypercholesteremia rats, and has an antidiuretic effect; Hierodula patellifera can increase the index of testis and thymus gland, raise the temperature in mice, and decrease the content of LPO in liver of the hypercholesteremia rets. The LD50 of the three species of Ootheca Mantidises are all over 320 g/kg.
This paper presents a new kind of multivision glare tester. Its composition, function, hardware, software and application are introduced. The tester provides a practical tool for evaluating visual function change under glare-producing conditions.
-6 degrees head down bed rest (-6 degrees HDBR) 21d were used to simulate weightlessness. 15 healthy males, aged 19-22, were divided into 3 groups with 5 people in each group: control group (-6 degrees HDBR), hypoxia group (-6 degrees HDBR + Low Oxygen), Qigong group (-6 degrees HDBR + Qigong). The results showed that the reduction of weight, perimeter of shank, daily average cardic output, basal cardic output and the pulse pressure of the Qigong group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.05). The basal cardic output and the perimeter of shank of the Hypoxia group reduced significantly than those of the control group (P<0.05). However, the reduction of the other physiological functions of the Hypoxia group were not significantly lower than that of the control group (P>0.05). During HUT +75 degrees 20 min orthostatic tolerance test after HDBR, the parameters in the Hypoxia group were better than those in the other groups. The average standing time was also longer, and no presyncopal symptom occured.

The effects of volatile oil from Rheum palmatum (RVO) on immunologic function in mice are studied. The results show that the delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) induced by 2, 4-dinitrochlorobenzene, lymphocytes transformation of (3H)-TdR induced by PHA, clearance rate of ivcarbon particles, phagocytic function of peritioneal macrophage and production of hemolysin induced by SRBC are markeyly increased with RVO given by oral administration or inhalation.
In this paper, a new, simple and rapid method for the analysis of steroids by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) is presented. A good resolution of the 12 steroids is obtained within 35 min with a gradient elution using a binary mobile phase composed of methanol and water. The analytical column used was 2.0mm x 150mm, packed with BDS (particle size 5microm) and the mobile phase flow rate was 0.2mL/min. Nebulizer gas flow rate and drift tube temperature, the two critical parameters for determining the reproducibility and signal-to-noise ratio of ELSD were 2.00mL/min and 95 degrees C, respectively. The response of the ELSD was non-linear as a result of basic light-scattering principles, the calibration curve by plotting lnY vs lnX (Y, X stand for peak area and concentration, respectively) shows a good linearity in the range of 5-50mg/L with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.99 for individual steroid and with relative standard deviation less than 6.92%. This method has been applied to the determination of steroids in milk powder and birds' feces, solid phase extraction on reverse phase bonded C18 (5mL/500mg) was used to treat the samples efficiently. The recoveries of the steroids were between 84.0%-102.8%.

This paper studied the near-infrared spectra of liquid samples. The plots of weights at each wavelength showed the spectral characteristics of pure materials. The samples could be classified by using plots of the scores of their first principal components. The principal component regression of samples was made. The obtained results were identical with the reference analytical values. The advantages of near-infrared spectroscopy, combined with principal component analysis, lie in its nondectructivity for samples and suitability for on-line measurements.
OBJECTIVE: To probe into the similarities and differences of birth weight by gestational age between China and the United States by a comparative study. METHODS: For China, we used the records of 24,150 single livebirth neonates. These records were collected between February 1986 and May 1987 from 43 hospitals and health care units in 15 large and middle cities in the South and North of China. For the United States, we used the natal records of National Center for Health Statistics from 1980 to 1987, selecting infants whose parents were coded as white and with higher socioeconomic backgrounds in the birth records. A total of 6,295,102 singleton livebirth neonates were selected. We used a method based on probability plots to define birth weight distributions. RESULTS: The 50th and 95th percentiles of birth weights by gestational age of American newborns with white parents were more than those of Chinese newborns. The 50th percentile values of birth weights of American male and female newborns were 357 g and 277 g (about 10% and 8% respectively of the birth weight of a term newborn) more than those of Chinese male and female newborns respectively at 40 weeks of GA. CONCLUSIONS: American white newborns were heavier than Chinese newborns. The differences were mainly due to race-specific influences, and were related to the differences in socioeconomic and educational background. We suggest that the references of birth weight by gestational age should be formulated separately in China and in the U.S.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the curative effect of integrated traditional and western medicine (TCM-WM) therapy on hepatolenticular degeneration (HLD). METHODS: Eighty patients with HLD were divided randomly into two groups (TCM-WM group and WM group), TCM-WM group (40 cases) were given orally dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) and Gandou ([symbol: see text]) decoction for 1 month. The efficacy was compared with that of 40 cases treated with DMSA as the control. The changes of urinary trace and macro-elements before and after treatment were observed. RESULTS: The total effective rate of TCM-WM group was significantly higher than that of WM group (P < 0.05), especially more patients with hepatic type responded well to treatment with TCM-WM than with only chelating agent DMSA. Urinary trace and macro-elements were all obviously elevated in patients of two groups after treatment (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: TCM-WM therapy appears extremely promising as new cupruretic method for treatment of HLD. It is particularly suitable for treating the patient with hepatic type.
We adopted the method of miminum inhibitary concentration (MIC) assay according to the method recommened by National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standard (NCCLS), and selected 2 fluconazole--susceptible strains from over 50 strains of Candida albicans which were preserved in our center (these strains were all isolated from clinical patients). The number of the strains are: BMU8945 (MIC value is 0.125 microgram/ml) and BMU8977 (MIC value is 0.25 microgram/ml). In addition, we also picked one strain of ATCC14053 (MIC value is 0.5 microgram/ml) as our research starting strains. After the induction of UV and DES, we obtained nearly 1000 colonies of fluconazole--resistant strains (MIC > 30 micrograms/ml). After subculture, we found that the characterization of drug--resistance of these strains could be inheredited stably.
Prevention and treatment of traumatic neuroma by implanting the proximal neural stump into the muscle were studied. Sixteen SD rats were used for the experimental study. The proximal stump of the left sciatic nerve was implanted into the nearby muscle as the experiment side, whereas the proximal stump of the right sciatic nerve was left untreated as the control side. The results were assessed with histological and electrophysiological methods. The experiment demonstrated that neuroma was formed in the control side one month postoperatively, whereas in the experimental side the nerve fibers were dispersed among the muscle fibers and no definite neuroma was formed. Implantation of neural stump into muscle could prevent and treat traumatic neuroma.
In order to obtain the anatomical basis of transferring the anterior interosseous nerve to repair the injury of thenar or ulnar nerve at the wrist level, ten fresh cadaveric forearms were dissected. The pronator quadratus branch of the median nerve was (1.5 +/- 0.4) mm in diameter with (866 +/- 144) nerve fibers. The recurrent branch of median nerve was (1.7 +/- 0.3) mm in diameter with (1,120 +/- 97) nerve fibers. The deep branch of ulnar nerve was (2.1 +/- 0.4) mm in diameter with (1,318 +/- 120) nerve fibers. To repair the thenar recurrent branch, nerve graft should be used to bridge between the distal end of the anterior interosseous nerve and the origination of the recurrent branch. The deep branch of the ulnar nerve could be repaired by direct suture after being dissected proximally. In patients, the technique was applied to repair 17 cases of injury of thenar branch and 3 cases of injury of deep branch of ulnar nerve. Among them, seventeen cases were followed up from 2 to 7 years. On electromyogram it was normal in 10. The myodynamia was restored in different degree: M2 in 2, M3 in 5, M4 in 7, M5 in 3. The procedure of the operation and the matters needed attention during the operation were discussed.
