Twenty-two competitive swimmers (9 males, 13 females) were compared with 18 controls (11 males, 7 females) for body composition, intakes of selected nutrients, VO2max, hemoglobin, hematocrit and magnesium concentrations in plasma, erythrocytes and whole blood. Subjects ranged in age from 9.5 to 12.9 years. Male swimmers had 6.5% less body fat than did male controls (p less than 0.05) whereas there was no significant difference in body fat between female swimmers and controls. Energy, protein and magnesium intakes for swimmers and controls of the same gender were similar. VO2max was significantly higher in swimmers than in controls for both sexes. Magnesium concentrations in plasma, erythrocytes and whole blood were similar for swimmers and controls. However, concentrations of magnesium expressed as milligrams/deciliter in plasma were 8% higher in male swimmers than in female swimmers (p less than 0.05). There was a significant (p less than 0.05) positive correlation between plasma magnesium and VO2max in males, r = +0.42, but not in females.

This paper describes an epifluorescence system that uses a pulsed laser source as an excitation source for quantitative fluorescence measurements. A 1 micron diameter portion of the sample can be illuminated with high intensity, short light pulses and the fluorescence can be measured with a fast detection system. Selective excitation is possible at 337 nm and from 357 to 710 nm by using different dyes in the laser system. The spectral bandwidth is 0.1-3 nm. Several advantages over the commonly used systems with continuum spectral sources are indicated, especially when measured intensities are low, as in the case of intrinsic fluorescence of the sample, and where reflection of unwanted excitation light may cause appreciable errors when using conventional light sources.

Six highly-trained male swimmers completed a maximum work capacity tethered swim and a 1-h continuous tethered swim at approximately 70% VO2max in order to evaluate total serum creatine kinase and CK-MB isoenzyme changes. Venous blood obtained before, 5 min post-, 6 h post-, and 24 h post-exercise was analyzed for total serum CK (kinetic UV method, normal = less than 100 U/l) and CK-MB isoenzyme (quantitative electrophoretic technique, normal = less than 5 U/l). VO2max averaged 4.59 +/- 0.28 l/min, with a mean total work time of 24.5 min to achieve maximum capacity. Mean resting total CK was 100.5 +/- 15.8 U/l. Compared to rest, neither swim bout produced a significant (p greater than 0.05) elevation in mean total creatine kinase. No CK-MB isoenzyme was observed in any post-exercise blood sample. Swimming, performed by highly-trained swimmers at high levels of intensity or for prolonged durations, may not impose sufficient degrees of trauma producing muscular stress. Therefore, the structural integrity of the cell membrane is maintained and the loss of intracellular creatine kinase to the bloodstream prevented.

A case of double pylorus with a chronic ulcer in one of the two channels is described. The patient, a middle-aged man with active rheumatoid arthritis, required partial gastrectomy to allow continued treatment of the arthritis with anti-inflammatory drugs. Detailed histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed features consistent with intramural penetration of an ulcer across the pyloric ring, resulting in a gastro-duodenal fistula. The findings provide further support for the hypothesis that the double pylorus is an acquired lesion, which occurs as an uncommon complication of chronic peptic ulcer.

Are the aged concentrated in the inner-city? Are they confined to lower value housing in older neighborhoods? Although the spatial pattern of the elderly in Toledo, Ohio, is dissimilar from that of the nonelderly, they are widely distributed throughout the city. The associations between the location of the elderly and variables such as distance to the Central Business District, age of neighborhood, value of housing, and multiple-family dwelling units are statistically significant. However, these associations are weak and at no time between 1940 and 1970 are more than 40% of the variations in the aged's distribution explained.
