Probe placement for sound pressure measurements in the aided ear.

Sound pressure measurements at the tympanic membrane in the aided ear were performed with application of the probe either through a 2 mm ventilation canal in the ear mould or in the space between the mould and the auditory canal. For frequencies above 500 Hz, concordant results were obtained by the two methods. The latter method has the advantage of being independent of the shape of the mould and the ear.

Herpes simplex virus specific secretory IgA in lacrimal fluid during herpes keratitis.

The correct diagnosis of herpes keratitis is very important, as the clinical manifestation can be similar to that caused by immunologic defects. The presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) specified IgG in lacrimal fluid is not of diagnostic value in cases where the eyes are severely inflamed, because the inflammation leads to impairment of the blood vessels and allows a passive diffusion of IgG from serum into the lacrimal fluid. In the present study we have developed a method for the detection of locally produced HSV-specific antibodies of the secretory IgA class present in lacrimal fluid from patients with active herpes keratitis.

Evaluation of methods for sizing of colloidal radiopharmaceuticals.

Many different quality control methods have been proposed for characterization of colloidal radiopharmaceuticals, as particle size seems to be of importance for the resulting biological distribution. Membrane filtration techniques using polycarbonate sheet filters (Nuclepore) is a simple technique. For a number of products good correlation was obtained to particle sizes measured by photon correlation spectroscopy (Nanosizer). For several preparations an increase in particle size with time was observed.

Erythroblastic transformation of chronic myeloid leukemia: hyperdiploid Ph1-positive karyotypes in primitive PAS-positive erythroblasts.

In a case of erythroblastic transformation of chronic myeloid leukemia, morphological, cytochemical, and cytogenetic properties of marrow cells were studied on three occasions. It was investigated whether any correlation could be demonstrated between these cytological parameters. The following observations suggested that early erythroblasts with granular periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positivity had hyperdiploid Ph1-positive karyotypes: (1) At the three times of study, the frequencies of Ph1-positive, hyperdiploid karyotypes varied in phase with the frequencies of erythroblast mitoses and inversely to those of granulopoietic mitoses. (2) In the three consecutive bone marrow samples, the frequencies of early erythroblasts (E1 + E2) presenting granular PAS positivity corresponded to and showed a statistically significant positive correlation to those of Ph1-positive hyperdiploid metaphases.

Immunological reactivity of herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 polypeptides electrophoretically separated and transferred to diazobenzyloxymethyl paper.

In this paper we report that viral polypeptides from herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2)-infected cells electrophoretically separated in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide-agarose gels and transferred to diazobenzyloxymethyl paper can react with rabbit hyperimmune sera, both polyvalent and prepared against specific antigens. The polyvalent hyperimmune sera against HSV-1 reacted with 17 HSV-1 polypeptide bands and 8 HSV-2 polypeptide bands. Concordantly, polyvalent sera against HSV-2 reacted with at least 16 HSV-2 polypeptide bands and 8 HSV-1 polypeptide bands. The antisera prepared against the specific antigens reacted with a smaller number of polypeptide bands. Preimmune sera and immune sera did not react with electrophoretically separated polypeptides from infected and uninfected cells, respectively. The immune localization of separated antigens test provides a powerful technique for identification of immunogenic viral polypeptides, especially those which are normally insoluble and therefore unavailable for immunological reactivity in immune precipitation tests.

99mTc-diethyl-HIDA: a contribution to the study of its structure.

Sephadex column chromatography has shown that 99mTc-diethyl-HIDA consists of two clearly separable components. One of them seems to be an intermediate compound changing into the other, almost completely within two hours after reconstitution of the diethyl-HIDA (Solco HIDA) with pertechnetate. The two components could be the mono- and biscomplex of N-(2,6-diethyl-acetanilid)-imino diacetic acid with one atom of technetium. Animal experiments show that there is no important difference in the biological distribution in mice between the two components.

Intubation of newborns and infants: a solution to the problem of water condensation.

Treatment with humidified air in intubated newborns and infants its often complicated by the embarrassing problem of water condensation. This problem is solved by the humidification system described below, in which the tube delivering humidified air is surrounded by an Armaflex-insulated spiral-wire tube. Through the space between the two tubes, an adjustable air warmer delivers dry air at a temperature and flow rate such that the temperature of the humidified air in the delivery tube is maintained above its dew-point temperature.
