Prevention and health promotion in the elderly.

Based on a review of the literature it can be said that a main obstacle to a rational approach to prevention and health promotion in the elderly, seems to be on the one side our lack of knowledge of what constitutes effective intervention, and on the other a feeling of great urgency--which may easily lead us astray. More basic information on factors influencing the individual rate of organ decline is needed, and controlled clinical trials of the effectiveness of different approaches to intervention are required. In the present state of things there is no need for therapeutic nihilism--important conditions causing distress and disability in old age are amenable to preventive action.

Construction of a recombinant bacterial plasmid containing pro-alpha 1(I) collagen DNA sequences.

A partially purified mRNA preparation enriched for chick collagen messenger RNA activity was used as template for the synthesis of double stranded cDNA. The cDNA was ligated into the HindIII site of the plasmid vector pBR322 and used to transform Escherichia coli x1776. One plasmid with an 800-base pair insert was shown to contain DNA sequences corresponding to Type I pro-alpha 1 collagen.

X-ray diffraction investigations of collagen fibril structure in dermatosparactic lamb tissues.

The x-ray diffraction of dermatosparactic lamb skin and tendon was compared with that from normal lamb tissues in order to investigate alterations in collagen fibril structure in the diseased tissues. Dermatosparactic tendon, which contains about 13 per cent pN-collagen, gave a normal x-ray pattern, whereas dermatosparactic skin, with 70 per cent pN-collagen, gave extremely weak meridional diffraction. The loss of meridional diffraction indicates a loss of long range axial alignment of the collagen molecules in the affected skin fibrils. Drying or reduction of dermatosparactic skin increased the meridional diffraction, indicating some restoration of the axial order.

SCANCANS--an interactive scanning cell analysis system.

This paper describes a computerized, general-purpose, interactive, scanning cell-analysis system developed at the Department of Clinical Cytology of the University Hospital in Uppsala. The system uses a Leitz MPV II scanning photometer, a PDP-8 computer with 24 k of core memory and a Tektronix 4010 graphic display terminal. A command interpreter and overlay structure which makes it simple to add new capabilities to the system is described. Some examples of command strings and the kind of operations the system can perform are included. Finally, the experience gained from using the system and some plans for future extensions are discussed.

A microspectrophotometric study of Papanicolaou-stained cervical cells as an aid in computerized image processing.

As part of a study of cytologic automation, microspectrophotometric investigation of Papanicolaou-stained cervical cells was performed, using a Leitz MPV-II scanning photometer connected to a PDP 8/F minicomputer. It was shown that the selection of one single wavelength may result in difficulties in detecting boundries between background and cytoplasm and/or between cytoplasm nucleus. A set of two wavelengths, 530 nm and 570 nm, were found to be optimal for the image processing of these cells.

Ehrlichia-infected ticks on migrating birds.

During the spring of 1996, an estimated 581,395 Ehrlichia-infected ticks were imported into Sweden by migrating birds. Ehrlichia gene sequences found in ticks collected from these migrating birds were identical to those of granulocytic ehrlichiosis found in domestic animals and humans in Sweden. These findings support the idea that birds may play a role in dispersing Ehrlichia.

Cholecystectomy rate in autopsies from a Danish urban area. Frederiksberg 1914-1987.

A review of 7,647 autopsies performed in 1914-1987 on 3,629 women and 4,018 men aged 50-79 years in a Danish urban area demonstrated significant increase in the rate of cholecystectomy (p less than 10(-3] for men and women 'at risk', i.e. with stone-containing or removed gallbladder. The rates for men and women were approximately parallel, but with median 10% (range -4%-27%) higher in the women. In 1987 the corresponding rates at autopsies were 37% for women and 21% for men. As cholecystectomy rates are products of multiple variables which may be independent of the individual patient, such figures are a questionable measure of morbidity from gallstones, but so long as cholecystectomy rates rise, the need for treatment cannot have been met.
