Beliefs of dental faculty and students about effective clinical teaching behaviors.

Both faculty and students in the College of Dentistry at The Ohio State University participated in a study to identify their beliefs about what clinical instructors should do to be effective and efficient teachers. In the first stage of a two-stage study, dental faculty members were asked to write out in as much detail as possible what things they believed clinical instructors should do when teaching. Similarly, junior and senior dental students were asked to describe what clinical instructor behaviors they believed enhanced their learning. All the descriptions were read and summarized, and a checklist of the behaviors was constructed. In the second stage both faculty and students were asked to respond to the importance of each behavior. The responses were factor analyzed, and the most important specific behaviors were identified. Five of the factors seem to describe dimensions of teaching of special importance for dental clinical faculty.

Lack of effect of skin cycle on survival of experimental skin flaps in rats.

Skin flaps were raised in 83 rats. In 58 of them the skin cycle was determined before the flap was raised, and in 25 of them the flap was raised without regard to cycle. There was no significant difference in the surviving length of flaps raised in early anagen, midanagen, telogen, or in randomly selected animals.

The location of the blood supply in random flaps.

The blood supply of random skin flaps in the pig is mainly in a microvascular plexus in the deeper layer of the dermis. However, there is vasculature in both the dermis and the subcutaneous fat, with good collaterals between the two systems.

Linguistic performance in vulnerable and autistic children and their mothers.

The authors studied the language patterns of schizophrenic mothers and their 4-year-old children, and compared them with the speech of normal mothers and children and normal mothers with autistic children. They found that children of schizophrenic mothers showed lags in language development and language distortions less severe than but in some ways similar to those seen in autistic children. Schizophrenic mothers were more likely to produce more deficient and/or distorted language in interactions with their children. Mothers of autistic children produced language that was equal to or above that of mothers of normal children on most parameters and adjusted their language to the chronological rather than the linguistic age of the child.

Cushing's syndrome associated with a bronchial adenoma. Possible periodic hormonogenesis.

Diagnostic and therapeutic problems in a patient with ectopic ACTH syndrome caused by a malignant bronchial adenoma are discussed. Persistent Cushing's syndrome was present following apparent total adrenalectomy, but radioactive scanning with 131I-19-iodocholesterol showed the presence of residual adrenal tissue in the right suprarenal bed. Amelioration of the hypercortisolism occurred after removal of the bronchial adenoma. A paradoxical elevation of adrenocortical activity followed administration of dexamethasone and data are presented which suggest that periodic secretion of ACTH accounted for this phenomenon.
