Fasting and oxidative activity of hypothalamus, amygdala, frontal cortex and adrenal glands in female rats during different sexual situations--oestrus, dioestrus, ovariectomized--and in male rats.

We have studied the influence of fasting upon the oxidative metabolism of several cerebral structures (hypothalamus, amygdala and frontal cortex) as well as the adrenal glands in female rats, both during their sexual cycle and ovariectomized, and male rats under a 48h fasting period. Results show significant differences in the oxidative metabolism of the amygdala in both male rats and ovariectomized females on comparing the fasting group with controls; moreover, the frontal cortex of male rats also shows significant differences when comparing both groups. The weight of the adrenal glands is significantly lower in ovariectomized female rats under fasting conditions than in controls. Correlation between the above mentioned cerebral and glandular structures during fasting processes, as well as performance of male and female rats before that situation, is discussed.

[Effects of prenatal alcohol consumption upon fecundity, natality, growth, vaginal opening and sexual cycle in the rat (author's transl)].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the action of prenatal alcohol consumption upon offspring and sexual maturity parameters on a rat strain which, for several years, drank only a brandy/water solution. With regard to fecundity and number of pups our results show no variation, while weight, vaginal opening, and sexual cycle are severely affected by alcohol intake. Possible alterations upon offspring due to chronic prenatal alcohol intake are examined.

Phage typing, an accessible and useful method in the epidemiological surveillance of diphtheria.

Within the framework of the measures for diphtheria prevention and control, phage typing of isolates is useful for epidemiological investigations in a disease focus and in general population. The identification of asymptomatic carriers of toxigenic C.diphtheriae and its eradication decrease the transmission rate of the disease. The study of the circulating phage types (6058) enabled us to demonstrate the frequency and distribution of the different phage types, toxigenic and nontoxigenic in Romania. With the current knowledge of the circulating phage types it can be concluded that imported cases of diphtheria have not occurred so far. The Romanian phage typing schemes are able to type isolates from overseas, sometimes through phage adaptation methods. Our phage typing schemes are also able to demonstrate any modifications in the phage sensitivity patterns of diphtheria.
