Angiotensin-induced drinking: sexual differences.

The dipsogenic effect of Angiotensin-II (A-II) in relation to sexual variables was studied. It was found that Angiotensin-II administered SC constitutes a stimulus which induces more drinking in females than in males. Moreover, the adult females show maximum sensitivity to A-II during proestrus. The males and females castrated at birth, and females androgenized at birth, drink similar volumes of water after A-II SC injection. The pattern of stimulated intake is different in the two sexes, and appears to depend upon the development of the rats.

Oxidative and glicolytic metabolism of the frontal cortex (latero-frontal) and of the posterior cortex (latero-occipital) in relation with the sexual activity of the rat.

The authors of this paper have ascertained the glycolytic metabolism and the oxidative metabolism (intake of QO2), of the frontal and posterior cortex in female rats at different stages of the sexual cycle, as also in ovariectomized animals, by the intake of glucose and the production of lactates. The results indicate a statistically significant increase of the oxidative metabolism of the posterior cortex (latero-occipital) in the estrual and proestrual phases, in comparisons with the diestral phase. The frontal cortex (latero-frontal) did not show any significant difference; moreover, the glycolitic metabolism did not alter in any of the tissues under observation. These findings, seem to suggest possible participation of the posterior cortex (latero-occipital) on the regulation of sexual cycle of the rat. The activation of this cortex occurs through the preponderant imbricantion of the tri-carboxylic acid cycle.

Effects of stress upon the oxidative metabolism and its correlation with gastric ulcer formation: the role of sex.

The metabolic-oxidative activity of different nervous and glandular structures (amygdala, hypothalamus, lateral-frontal cerebral cortex, adrenal glands) in male and female rats under acute stress caused by physical immobilization, was determined. The sexual cycle of the female rat was controlled by examination of their vaginal frotis. One experimental group during estrus and another one during diestrus were selected. At the same time ovariectomy was performed on an experimental group in order to eliminate the hormonal influences of the ovary. Results show there are no significant differerneces in the oxidative metabolism. Nor in the numbers of ulcers. Hypothalamus-hypophyseal-adrenocortical activation was made manifest on obtaining significant differences in the weight of the adrenal glands, a fact long ago reported in a number of studies. Necropsy showed severe gastric hemorrhages and ulcer in the stomach. Nevertheless, no significant differences between the distinc experimental groups were obtained. The likely participation of sexual hormones in female rats is discussed in the light of our results.

Weight, height, thorax and of menarche in Spanish schoolgirls.

In this paper, the authors study the correlation which exists between somatic development, represented by weight, height and thorax, and the age of onset of menarche. The results indicate that girls showing early menarche have a somatic development greater than the mean. It has also been possible to show that the greatest increase in height occurs before the menarche, while the greatest increase in weight coincides with the appearance of the menarche, or occurs shortly afterwards.

[Pilot training experience in lip-reading skills for nurses in intensive care units].

UNLABELLED: In the intensive care unit (ICU) of Mestre hospital (Italy) a research was carried out to analyse the possibility to improve nurses' lip-reading skills. METHODS: A specialized speech therapist organized a 20 hour training course for 34 health workers in ICU. RESULTS: The participants had a lip-reading test at the beginning and at the end of the course and six months later. The final test revealed that participants could recognize a greater number of typical words in ICU in comparison to the initial test. Yet, after 6 months the skill decreased to the level shown at the beginning of the course. On the other hand, the trend shows that some participants' skill did not decrease. Neither the starting level nor intermediate stage are conditioned by sex, age, profession, and experience. In order to measure clinic efficacy, the participants had another test to understand if improved lip-reading skill could influence the following variables: word comprehension, nurse attitude to communication toward non-speaking people, patient emotional status and nurse emotional status. The training course seems to have had good effects on nurses' attitudes towards their patients and on their communication. Yet, study results do not show if increased lip-reading skills have real positive effects on ICU communication and whether this method is better than usual communication methods (e.g. mimic or alphabetic board).

Normalization of the altered liver function tests after islet transplantation in diabetic rats.

The purpose of our study was to determine if streptozotocin induced diabetes (SID) in rats produces alterations in hepatic function, as described in poorly controlled diabetic patients, and if islet transplantation (islet-Tx) would subsequently ameliorate this status. Hepatocellular dysfunction was evaluated by the aspartate aminotransferase (SGOT) and the alanine aminotransferase (SGPT) activities in plasma. For the evaluation of cholestasis the plasma alkaline phosphatase (APase) activity was used. These determinations were performed in normal, SID, SID with Islet-Tx, and SID Wistar rats with sham-Tx. Also, glucose was measured in plasma samples, as well as histological studies of the liver were performed. More than 1,000 isogeneic islets (islet-Tx group) or non viable insular tissue (sham-Tx group) were transplanted via mesenteric ileal vein three weeks after SID. The results showed that SID in rats produces alterations in the hepatic function as well as in the structure of the hepatocytes, and the normalization of carbohydrate metabolism by islet transplantation restores normal hepatic function and morphology.

Effects of sialoadenectomy and castration in female rats.

Previous work on the role of the submaxillary glands in the control of the oestrous cycle in rats has been extended to castrated rats in order to avoid the overlapping between sexual and salivary hormones. Animals were sacrificed 30 days after sialadectomy or pseudosialadectomy. The data show that simultaneous castration and sialadectomy increases significantly the glucaemia level and decreases the weight of the adrenal glands. Non-simultaneous castration and removal of the submaxillary glands decreases the weight of the parotid glands. This effect decreases when both actions are simultaneous. On the other hand, castration produces an important decrease in QO2 uptake in tested structures. Removal of submaxillary glands produces a significant increase of QO2 in hypothalamus and thyroid glands. Simultaneous castration and sialadectomy at the anterior cortex, posterior cortex and parotid gland level shows similar results with respect to desalivated rats; other structures show results similar to the castrated group values. From these results, the role played by submaxillary glands in the control of the sexual cycle of the rat and the possible relation to other structures is discussed.
