The first 22 MeV micron installation for radiation therapy is described with regard to the general design, the beam transport and the gantry. The first measurements of the electron depth dose curves indicate that the distributions obtained are superior to those of most betatrons and linear accelerators. For the same electron beam energy the depth of dose maximum and the 90 or 80 per cent dose level is considerably increased. The 20.9 MV photon beam has similar depth dose characteristics as a 20 MV betatron.

Insulin release in response to dextran-linked p-chloromercuribenzoic acid was studied in microdissected pancreatic islets of non-inbred ob/ob-mice. No contamination of the dextran-linked mercurial with free chloromercuribenzoic acid was detected before or after the incubation with islets. In comparison with free mercurial, of the same thiol-blocking activity, the dextran-linked compound had a weak insulin-releasing action with a different dose vs. response relationship. The dextran-linked mercurial had no demonstrable effect on the islet content of cyclic AMP. The results support the hypothesis that free organic mercurials mainly stimulate insulin release by blocking thiol ground that are embedded within the beta-cell plasma membranes beneath their surfaces.

The effect of intravenous injection of 50 mug/kg of glucagon on the hepatic circulation of the pig was studied in 12 animals. Glucagon caused an arterial pressure reduction of 11 mm Hg after two minutes and 7 mm Hg after ten minutes. The portal pressure and blood flow were not altered. The superior mesenteric arterial flow decreased by 12%. The hepatic arterial blood flow increased by 80% after two minutes and by 58% after ten minutes. There was no difference in response when anesthesia was achieved with small intravenous doses of thiopental (Pentothal) sodium or 70% nitrous oxide in oxygen and tubocurarine chloride.

The polysaccharide antigen produced by Eubacterium saburreum, strain L 49, is composed of D-glycero-D-galacto-heptose and a new sugar, tentatively identified as 6-deoxy-D-altro-heptose. It contains chains of alternating (1 leads to 3)- and (1 leads to 6)- linked beta-D-glycero-D-galacto-heptopyranosyl residues, the latter being substituted with 6-deoxy-alpha-heptofuranosyl groups at O-3. The polysaccharide further contains 0-acetyl groups, linked to O-7 of part of the heptosyl residues and to O-2 of part of the 6-deoxyheptosyl groups.

It has earlier been shown that the hormone glucagon has the property of increasing liver blood flow both in normotensive dogs as well as in dogs in hemorrhagic shock. This study was done to evaluate the effect of glucagon given in normotensive dogs after occlusion of the hepatic artery. Glucagon was given in a single dose of 50 mug/kg bodyweight. The study shows that glucagon under these circumstances increased total liver blood flow 67% compared to an increase of 3% in a control group. The increase is statistically significant compared to the effect of placebo injection in a control group. A benefit of the hormone is suggested in man in surgical situation where occlusion of the hepatic artery becomes necessary.
A three-decade followup of a family in whom multiple colonic polyps were found in 5 out of 11 members of one generation is presented. In 3 of these members, cancer was present in the colorectum. The clinical picture as well as the pathologic findings differ from those seen in familial polyposis. In the previous generation two cases of gastric cancer were found, as well as one case of colonic cancer. The high incidence of colonic polyps and cancer suggests a hereditary disease, but the mode of transmission cannot be definitely determined without following this family for a longer period.
