Cancer of the skin in blacks. III. A review of nineteen black patients with Bowen's disease.

In a series of nineteen black patients with Bowen's disease of the skin diagnosed between 1948 and 1982, twenty-one lesions occurred. Involvement on non-sun-exposed areas was three times more common than on sun-exposed areas. The most common location was the lower extremity. A history of arsenic ingestion could not be confirmed in any of the patients, but was suggested by histopathologic findings in at least one instance. Invasive lesions developed in five patients, three of whom subsequently died from metastatic disease. Five patients also had a second noncutaneous malignancy.

Cancer of the skin in blacks. IV. A review of nineteen black patients with Kaposi's sarcoma.

Kaposi's sarcoma in American blacks is relatively rare, according to the literature. Using information from the Tumor Registry of Charity Hospital of Louisiana in New Orleans, we discuss the available data on nineteen black patients (10 men, 9 women), with histologically diagnosed Kaposi's sarcoma between the years 1948 to 1983. The overall mortality rate directly attributable to their disease was 21%. The mean survival of patients dying from disease was 2.0 years from the time of diagnosis. The mean survival for the entire series was 6.1 years. No second primary lymphoreticular neoplasms were reported.

The use of gated radionuclide angiography in the diagnosis of cardiac contusion.

No currently used diagnostic test is an accurate predictor of patients who will develop morbidity or mortality from cardiac contusion. In a prospective study we used gated cardiac radionuclide angiography to assess cardiac function in 30 patients with blunt chest trauma, and we compared the results of this test with those of other diagnostic studies for cardiac contusion to determine whether gated angiography is a more accurate predictor of serious cardiac injury. Diagnostic tests included the following: serial electrocardiograms (ECG), serial creatine phosphokinase muscle-brain isoenzyme (CPK-MB) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes, gated cardiac radionuclide angiography, and technetium-99m (Tc-99m) pyrophosphate scintigraphy. Abnormal studies were present in 26 patients; 22 showed abnormalities in CPK-MB, 19 on ECG, and five on gated scan. No patient demonstrated an abnormal Tc-99m pyrophosphate scan or abnormal elevation of LDH isoenzyme. Although no diagnostic test was predictive of morbidity and mortality, CPK-MB isoenzyme was the only test to correlate with morbidity and mortality. Morbidity and mortality correlated most closely with the number of associated major injuries and the presence of hypotension or hypoxia.

Measurement of the repulsive force between polyelectrolyte molecules in ionic solution: hydration forces between parallel DNA double helices.

We have measured the repulsive force between B-form double helices in parallel packed arrays of polymer-condensed DNA in the presence of 0.005-1.0 M ionic solutions. Molecular repulsion is consistently exponential with a 2.5-3.5 A decay distance, when the separation between DNA surfaces is 5-15 A. Only weakly dependent on ionic strength and independent of molecular size, this intermolecular repulsion does not obey the predictions of electrostatic double-layer theory. Rather, it strongly resembles the "hydration force" first recognized and quantified between phospholipid bilayers. Only beyond 15 A separation between molecules is there evidence of electrostatic double-layer forces. The quantitative failure of electrostatic double-layer theory seen here must gravely affect accepted analyses of other polyelectrolyte systems. Because the packing of condensed DNA resembles the spacings of DNA in many bacteriophages, our results permit estimation of the "DNA pressure" in phage heads.

A case of supernumerary ovary is presented. This rare gynecologic abnormality, which is usually diagnosed on laparotomy or autopsy, was noted on laparoscopy.

Molecular symmetry of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase from Bacillus coagulans.

The thermolabile glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase from the facultative thermophile Bacillus coagulans has a crystallographically exact 2-fold rotation axis of symmetry in one of its orthorhombic crystal forms (Lee et al., 1982). Using various crystallographic techniques, we have now identified this axis to be the molecular R-axis, which is the symmetry axis that relates the two subunits that form each active site of the tetrameric enzyme. This is in contrast to the symmetry of the human skeletal muscle enzyme wherein the crystallographically exact axis was found to be the Q-axis (Buehner et al., 1974). This finding could have important implications for the possible mechanism for the allosteric behavior of this molecule.

Calculation of volume fluctuation for globular protein models.

The extent of volume fluctuation is calculated for two simple geometrical models of globular protein molecules subjected to a potential that is proportional to the surface area freshly generated by the thermal breathing motion. The proportionality constant, gamma, has the unit of surface tension. The calculated values are compared with estimates made from the compressibility measurements. After an approximate correction for the hydration effect, the experimental values are found to be between those calculated by using gamma values of 25 and 46 cal/mol/A2 (1 cal = 4.184 J). These values bracket previously reported independent estimates of interfacial tension that presumably operates at the interface between a nonpolar molecule and water. This result appears to indicate that the solvent water plays a significant role in determining the extent of volume fluctuation of globular proteins and that the concept, and the actual value of the estimate, of the interfacial tension around a nonpolar molecule in water may, in fact, be useful in some applications.

Growth performance and intestinal transit time of rats fed purified and natural dietary fibers.

The effects of some selected purified fibers were compared to those derived from cereals or legume seeds. Rats were fed for at least 9 weeks and measurements were taken to determine feed consumption, weight gain, feed efficiency ratios (FER), protein efficiency ratios (PER), apparent protein digestibility, and rate of transit through the gastrointestinal tract. Most diets were designed to contain approximately 10% dietary fiber and 10% protein. Compared to the fiber-free diet, pectin reduced weight gain, FER, PER and apparent protein digestibility values. Cellulose, xylan and raffinose had no influence on feed intake, weight gains or FERs. However, cellulose and xylan increased PER values and the rates of food passage but decreased the apparent protein digestibility values. Feed utilization, protein digestibility and growth were similar for the wheat bran, corn bran and fiber-free diets. These cereal fibers caused the rates of transit to be significantly increased relative to the fiber-free control diet. The hull and cell-wall-fiber fractions of beans, when compared to the fiber-free diet, had little effect on feed consumption, growth, FER or PER. The cell-wall-fiber fraction reduced apparent protein digestibility and the hull fraction accelerated food passage relative to the fiber-free diet.
