The anatomical distribution of sunlight.

The relative distribution of natural ultraviolet radiation has been measured at ten sites on the surface of an unclothed manikin for 2 h around solar noon on 19 different days during late summer in Canterbury, U.K. The dosimeter used was polysulphone film. The results obtained indicate that vertical surfaces of the body receive about one half of the dose relative to the vertex and that the relative doses at different sites are independent of weather conditions.

Problems associated with ultraviolet dosimetry in the photochemotherapy of psoriasis.

A hypothetical action spectrum for the regression of lesions in photochemotherapy of psoriasis is proposed. An ideal detector should have a wavelength response which matches this action spectrum but this is generally not the case with commercially available photometers. The problems that may arise by indiscriminate use of such detectors are discussed, together with a suggested solution.

A dosimeter for long wave ultraviolet radiation.

A polymer film, which incorporates phenothiazine as the chromophore, has been developed as a personnel dosimeter for long wave ultraviolet radiation. It is stable, reproducible and is particularly suited to monitoring the doses received by patients undergoing photochemotherapy for psoriasis.

The 99mTc-DTPA dynamic renal scan with deconvolution analysis.

Dynamic renal studies were performed with 99mTc-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (99mTc-DTPA). The results were analyzed by the method of mathematical deconvolution in order to obtain the impulse response function of the kidney. Regional analysis of the kidney was attempted by evaluating the independent responses of the renal parenchyma and renal pelvis to a bolus injection of 99mTc-DTPA.

An experimental and calculated dose distribution in water around CDC K-type caesium-137 sources.

The radiation distribution in water around caesium-137 K-type sources has been measured and the experimental results used to provide data for an expression for dose calculations which may be conveniently applied in computer programs. The calculated absorbed dose rate obtained in this manner is estimated to be within 3% of the actual dose rate for any point in water up to 8 cm from the source. It is also suggested that the strength of a brachytherapy source be expressed in terms of an experimental exposure rate at some well-defined distance since this quantity may be determined more precisely and with less ambiguity than source activity.

How effective are UV opaque face shields in UVB phototherapy cabins?

A few hours after servicing illuminated lamps inside a whole body ultraviolet radiation B (UVB) phototherapy cabin, a technician developed erythema to the anterior neck with subsequent peeling, despite wearing a UV-opaque face shield. Measurements using polysulphone film badges attached to various sites on the head and neck of a mannikin were carried out to explore the spatial distribution of UVB exposure. It was found that the lower face and neck can receive sufficient exposure to result in erythema, the reason being that the fluorescent lamps will extend to about 1.5 m inferior to the head of an upright person and so result in irradiation from below. It is important, therefore, that if operators or service personnel need to be in an illuminated UVB cabin for several minutes or more, adequate protection should be provided to the chin and neck, in addition to a UV-opaque face shield.
