[Use of the 25-point ocular grid plate in quantitative-morphological studies of eutopic and dystopic testes of children].

From plains histologic preparations of children's testicles the volume of seminiferous tubules and extratubular tissue were calculated by use of the points counting method. In ectopic testicles, the extratubular part is significantly larger than in normally descended testes. The range of the values measured by this method diminishes the higher the total count of test points is. The 25-points-test-net of VEB Carl Zeiss Jena in particular met all requirements for quantitative examinations of the morphology of testicles.

[Effect of the fixation of biopsy specimens from rat testicles on the results of morphometric studies].

The kind of the fixation method of bioptic preparations of the testicles has a decisive influence on the morphometrically determinable average diameter of the seminiferous tubules. Under the same conditions experiments 207 preparations of the parenchyma of the testicles of rats were fixed in Bouin's and Carnoy's solution as well as in 10% formalin solution. The measuring values of the diameter of the tubules of the preparations fixed in Bouin's solution were largest. Therefore the authors recommend to perform the fixation of the bioptic preparations of the testicles in Bouin's solution. Thus standardized experimental conditions and possibilities of the comparison of morphometric findings may be got.

[Determination of the total length of seminiferous tubules in normally descended testes in children].

The total length of all seminiferous tubules of a testicle can be determined with the help of histomorphometric investigation methods. Two different methods are described and discussed. For this purpose bioptically got specimens of parenchyma of the size of a rice-grain are sufficient. In children the total length of the tubules constantly increases. During the prepuberal phase of life an acceleration of the growth of the length of the seminiferous tubules begins. The results of 89 autoptically got and morphometrically examined testicles of children are reported.

[Morphometric Investigations of Regularly Descended Testicles of Children (author's transl)].

On 89 regularly descended, autoptically obtained testicles, the following morphometric investigations were performed: Calculations of the volums, the mean diameter of the tubuli seminiferi, the total lenght of the tubuli, the mean content of spermatogonia per cross section of one tubulus seminiferus, and the total number of spermatogonia. The testicles evaluated have been obtained from children at the age of one day to fourteen years. The calculation of normal values of quantitatively assessed testicle structures are of fundamental importance for the estimation of the morphological significance of congenitally dystopic testicles.

[Value of ophthamoneurologic diagnosis in cranio-cerebral injuries of the child].

In recent years, there has been a relatively high incidence of craniocerebral traumas among children. It is essential that careful ophthalmological examinations be made in addition to a general diagnosis, which should preferably be established by surgical means, as well as neurological and roentgenological examinations. The most important criteria of examination are the determination of the absence of external injuries to the eyes, the assessment of the mobility of the eyeball, tests of pupillary reactions, and an evaluation of the eyeground. The results of reexaminations made on 108 children, who had been receiving in-patient treatment, one to five years ago, because of craniocerebral traumas of different degrees of severity, underscore the importance of ophthalmological diagnosis in this particular group of diseases.

[Methods and problems of spermatogonia counts in histological section preparations].

The number of spermatogonia of the testicles is an important criterion for the assessment of the probable fertility prognosis. The determination of the mean content of spermatogonia per cross section of one tubulus seminiferus is considered as a standardized procedure in clinical practice. Counts of spermatogonia in 4 micron thick section preparations bear great errors. Such determinations have to be done on extremely thick sections. In the present study, this is proved by the results of morphometric investigations on nuclei of spermatogonia. On 89 testicle preparations autoptically obtained from children, measurements of the diameter and calculations of the relations of the axes as well as of the volumes of the nuclei of the spermatogonia are carried out.

[Determination of statistical error using the hit method].

Referring to a histological example, an explanation is given which parameters of the hit procedure have an influence upon the magnitude of the random measuring errors. The dispersion of the measuring values decreases as the number of test points increases. Moreover, if the number of test points is equal, the dispersion is dependent on the relationship between test point distance and mean diameter of the object structures. It reaches a minimum if this ratio is greater than 1 or approximates 1. By subdividing a measurement with numerous test points into small sections it will be possible to calculate the standard deviation. For this, coarse-mesh test nets with few points are favourable.
