The aim of this paper is to give some corrections to the article of Matos and Heppes "A simple nonparametric procedure: the Maximin-test", published in 1981, volume 19 of this journal.

The technology of composting must guarantee the material-chemical, biological and physical-technical reaction conditions essential for the rotting process. In this, the constituents of the input material and the C/N ratio play an important role. Maintaining optimum decomposition conditions is rendered difficult by the fact that the physical-technical reaction parameters partly exclude each other. These are: optimum humidity, adequate air/oxygen supply, large active surface, loose structure with sufficient decomposition volume. The processing of the raw refuse required to maintain the physical-technical reaction parameters can be carried out either by the conventional method of preliminary fragmentizing, sieving and mixing or else in conjunction with separating recycling in adapted systems. The latter procedure obviates some drawbacks which mainly result from the high expenditure required for preliminary fragmentation of the raw refuse. Moreover, presorting affords the possibility of reducing the heavy-metal content of the organic composing fraction and this approaches a solution to the noxa disposal problem which at present stands in the way of being accepted as an ecological waste disposal method.

For the judgment of cell-mediated immune reactivity in patients with chronic liver diseases in comparison to healthy test persons tests of the skin were performed by means of the neoantigen DNCB and the recall antigens tuberculin and streptokinase. Depending on the degree of severity of the hepatopathies the intensity of reaction decreased in the DNCB-test. There were no relations to the etiopathogenetic factors of the liver diseases. The results speak for the fact that the disturbed immune reactivity to DNCB is to be regarded as sequela of the disease. The anamnestic immune response controlled by means of the two recall antigens did not show any quantifiable differences to the reference collective in the chronic hepatopathies. It is concluded that the findings of skin tests are not able to contribute to the indication for immunosuppressive or immune modulating therapeutic methods.
The alpha-amylase loci Amy 1 and Amy 2 and other loci on chromosome 1 were investigated for their linkage relationship to the PKU locus. Ten families were informative for the study of linkage between PKU/Amy, 20 for PKU-Fy, 11 for PKU/PGM 1, and 10 for PKU/Rh linkage. The probabilities of linkage at different recombinant fractions were calculated according to Bayes' theorem. The results are in striking contrast with those of Kamaryt et al. who found strong evidence for close linkage between the amylase loci and the PKU locus, whereas with our results close linkage can be excluded; loose linkage is possible but unlikely. The results are discussed with regard to the genetic heterogeneity of phenylketonuria.
In a prospective study, ultrasound examinations of the gallbladder as well as cholecystocholangiography were carried out in 77 patients with solitary stones and the ultrasound stone symptoms were compared with the x-ray findings. The ultrasound stone reflex as well as the wideness of the sonic-shadow correlated significantly with the size of the stones. The stone size can be approximately calculated from the wideness of the sonic shadow. On the other hand dependence of the ultrasound stone symptoms and the radiographic defined calcium was not evident. While the stone size can be sonographically defined, the indentification of calcium in gallstones continues to remain a domain of radiographic methods.
The effect of the contrast medium Visotrast 370 on the water content and volume of erythrocytes, and on the electrolyte levels of plasma and erythrocytes during I-V urography was examined. The measurements were carried out at one, ten and 30 minutes after injection. One minute after injection there was a significant reduction in the water content and volume of the erythrocytes. The levels of sodium and potassium ions in the plasma were reduced ten minutes after contrast injection, but increased in the erythrocytes. After 30 minutes, significant changes could no longer be demonstrated. Possible causes for these changes and their effects on other organs are discussed. Certain practical conclusions are drawn.

The effect of the concentration of the contrast media Visotrast 370, Dimer X and Adipiodon on the water content of human erythrocytes was analysed in vitro. While a concentration-dependent water discharge (shrinkage) of erythrocytes was found in the presence of Visotrast 370 and Dimer X, the application of Adipiodon caused water uptake (swelling). Possible causes of swelling of red blood cells despite the hyperosmolality of Adipiodon are discussed.
Standardized hair washes have been carried out at weekly intervals over a period of four weeks in a total of 35 male subjects. A standard surfactant solution was applied in all subjects for the first two washes. For the third and fourth wash three different surfactant solutions were used in three groups of subjects. It was observed that the microbial splitting of the triglycerides into fatty acids can be inhibited by surfactants. We think that in this way a seborrhoea oleosa can be changed into a seborrhoea sicca. Moreover some but not all surfactants have a strong "keratolytic" action when they are used in shampoos.

In contrast to the great number of etiological models for bulimia nervosa, few conceptions determine the therapeutic practice. Two of these models, the ego-psychological model of reduced impulse-control and the behavioural model focussing the influence of "restrained eating" are empirically compared. Both models are not supposed to be of ubiquitous validity, but valid for subgroups of bulimic women. The theoretical assumptions are translated into structural equations and a sample of 127 bulimic women is divided up into 2 subsamples according to criteria which are presumed to define the validity of both etiological models. In agreement with the assumptions the "restrained eating" model shows the better "fit" with the one subsample while the ego-psychological model is more adequate for the other group.
In a large 1000 bed University Medical Center the psychosomatic consultation service (PCS) was evaluated by a two step investigation. 1. Housemen (interns) and senior staff members were asked by questionnaires about their previous experiences with psychological medicine and particularly about their satisfaction with the PCS and how they would estimate the need for additional psychosomatic treatment for the patients on their ward. A striking disproportion was found between actual requests (1.8%) for PCS and the estimated need (18%) for additional psychosomatic advice or treatment. 2. Questionnaires dealing with satisfaction were given to the consultant, the patient and the consultee. The satisfaction of the consulte was mainly determined by the promptness in answering his request and formal aspects of the exchange, the patient satisfaction was mainly determined by the way they viewed the help, the sense of importance of the consultation and by the feeling of being understood by the consultant. This seems to influence the future compliance. Surprisingly, a correlation between the patient satisfaction with the consultation and the quantitative and qualitative aspects of exchange between consultant and consultee was less clearly demonstrated. This could be seen as a hint of communication problems between the consultee and his patient, the improvement of which is one of the main concerns of psychosomatic consultation.
There is a long tradition of psychoanalytically oriented treatments for in-patients in Germany and a large proportion of bulimics is treated in this way, but there are very few reported controlled trials for this form of treatment. The treatment rationale for psychoanalytically orientated psychotherapy is discussed against the background of the specific psychopathology of bulimia and the principal elements of this form of treatment are presented. Recent results of a controlled study involving n = 32 Patients with a follow-up of 38 months are reported with regard to comparable evaluations. The possible healing factors via which psychoanalytically orientated treatments achieve their effects with bulimia nervosa are discussed.
