Interaction of receptive field responses and shift-effect in cat retinal and geniculate neurons.

Spike activity of single optic tract fibres and lateral geniculate cells of the lightly anaesthetized immobilized cat were recorded in response to short, small (local) test flashes into the receptive field center before, during and after rapid displacements of a remote, large (global) pattern. 2. The majority of retinal and geniculate neurons failed to produce algebraic summation of the excitatory shift-effect and an excitatory test response. 3. For many cells outside lamina A and A1 of the dorsal lateral geniculate body the test response was smaller than the control even though two excitatory responses were combined. 4. The resonses to displacements of a steady, local spot are weakly affected by simultaneous displacements of a global pattern if the local responses are strong; but if the latter are weak the global shift-effect dominates the response to a displacement of the total pattern. 5. Saccadic suppression may be explained by retinal and geniculate neurons functioning in two modes of local or global responses, both of which cannot be transmitted properly at the same time.

[Vision with moving eyes].

Recent microelectrode studies of single neurons of the retina, lateral geniculate nucleus, superior colliculus, and visual and parietal cortex are related to the problems of visual stability, prevention of fading, control of eye movements, and visual attention.

Genetic polymorphism of the fourth component of human complement.

A modified electrophoretic system for the determination of C4 polymorphism has been found with which the new allotype F1 could be detected. The system has been applied to the population distribution of C4 in 266 unrelated Germans, further to association and linkage studies. Gene frequency was 0.3985 for C4F, 0.5526 for C4S and 0.0489 for the rare C4 genes. In the population sample, significant association between Bf and C4 but no indication for close association between C4 and GLO I has been found. In the families HLA, Bf and C4 segregated together.

[Heart injury due to blunt violence].

One case of non-penetrating injury of the heart is reported. The problem of the causal relation between accident and injury of the heart as well as the problems of the pathophysiological mechanisms of non-penetrating traumatic injury of the heart are discussed. The localisation of the non-penetrating traumatic injury, the volume and the energy of the object causing the injury as well as the preexisting degree of coronary sclerosis is of some importance for the severity of heart damages after non-penetrating traumatic injuries of the heart.

[A controlled study of treating haemophilia A on an out-patient basis (author's transl)].

For six months 36 U factor VIII concentrates per kg bodyweight and week were administered to six out-patients with severe haemophilia A. The injection regimen was changed in every patient every two months, from 36 U/kg once to 18 U/kg twice and 12 U/kg three times, intravenously. The six possible combinations of these three dosage schedules were used in the patients in a strictly randomised manner, and all patients were treated during the same period. In the pre-trial period (treatment as needed) there were an average of 35 bleedings per two months. On continual treatment there were 21 bleedings on weekly injections of 36 U factor VIII per kg, 14 on twice weekly 18 U/kg and none on 12 U/kg, three times weekly. The differences are statistically significant. The absence of bleeding on the last dosage schedule was achieved during normal working. Days lost from work per patient per month was zero on three times 12 U/kg, 0.4 day on twice 18 U/kg and once 36 U/kg, while it had been five days in the pre-trial period. In addition to freedom from bleeding and no lost days from work, there was increased mobility and physical capacity.

[Diverticulosis of the sigmoid colon from the radiological point of view (author's transl)].

Diverticulosis is one of the most common diseases of the colon. Its importance arises from complications. In countries of the Western hemisphere the incidence is 10-20% beyond the age of 50. Among the natives of Africa and South-Eastern Asia it is practically unknown. It is suggested that the disease is caused by low residue diet, modern living conditions. and constitutional disorders. 500 barium enemas revealed 13,4% patients with diverticula including a 5-year-old child and a 32-year-old woman. The incidence of diverticulosis among patients over 40 years of age is 19,6%. The sex distribution is 1 : 1,9 male to female. The complications are demonstrated by case histories: Diverticulitis with ileus, foreign body trap, sub-acute perforation, sigmoid-vaginal fistula, sigmoid-bladder fistula, sigmoid-uterus fistula in a 5-year-old girl.
