The possible presence of a relationship between intra-uterine presentation and vestibular function was studied for this paper. -- Thermic and rotational balance tests as well as tests for vestibulospinal reaction and for spontaneous and provoked nystagmus were applied to 42 children in school age who had been born from breech and transverse presentations and to another 30 children who had been born from vertex presentations. The results seem to support the assumption that normal intrauterine presentation depends on intact condition of the vestibular system.
The Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is a rare disease of unknown etiology with chronic course. Clinical symptoms are not characteristic or missing completely. The disease is diagnosed by X-ray examination and histologic examination from biopsy specimen of the lung. A report on the first case in Austria is given.
During continuous movement of a large global pattern remote from the classical receptive field retinal ganglion cells discharge considerably faster (continuous shift effect), and center responses are decreased in amplitude for neurons with a relatively high ongoing activity (mostly ON-center) but increased for neurons with no ongoing discharge (mostly OFF-center). The results suggest that all retinal ganglion cells have more or less access to one long range mechanism, which is non-linear and almost all-or-none in nature.
The estimation of serum prolactin (Prl) and norepinephrine (NE) in chronic schizophrenics treated with neuroleptics for 5-25 years showed no elevated Prl levels in either men or women (4.9 +/- 4.1 and 13.7 +/- 12.1 ng/ml, respectively). No significant correlation to duration or dosage of neuroleptic treatment, psychopathological syndromes and occurrence of tardive dyskinesia or parkinsonian side effects could be seen. The development of tolerance of the tuberoinfundibular dopamine system is discussed. The NE levels were distinctly elevated in both sexes; in men up to 0.77 +/- 0.4 and in women up to 0.90 +/- 0.48 ng/ml. This elevation is induced rather by neuroleptic treatment than by external factors. A significant relationship between dosage or duration of anticholinergic treatment and the severity of tardive dyskinesia was found in men.

Taking a random sample of 147 patients a substantial correlation of 0.54 between the "Mehrfachwahl-Wortschatz-Test (MWT-B)" by Lehrl and the "Progressiver Matrizen-Test" by Raven could be found. The MWT-B did not show significant differences between the age groups of 34-44 years, 45-54 years and 55-64 years. In the PMT differences between the age groups only showed up when the raw-scores were converted to IQ-scores (reffering to the corresponding age groups). Using the raw-scores no significant differences could be determined. Investigating an average IQ of 109 in the PMT, we found an average IQ of 97 in the MWT-B for the same patients. A main reason for the superelevated IQ-scores in PMT seems to be the reference to different age groups. A new standardization of the test should be undertaken.

Activity of neurons if foveal striate and prestriate cortex of trained rhesus monkeys was recorded with metal microelectrodes. While animals fixated a small spot at a given fixation distance (38 or 57 cm), bright or dark bars moving across a frontoparallel plane were presented at different depths in a range of +/- 10 cm about the fixation distance. Almost all cells showed binocular interaction. Neurons with balanced ocularity (approximately equal monocular responses) usually facilitated each other and were tuned to depth around the plane of fixation often with inhibitory flanks nearer and further. Neurons with unbalanced ocularity either inhibited each other or had asymmetric depth sensitivity profiles, i.e. activation by stimuli in front and suppression by stimuli behind the fixation plane (near cells) or vice versa (far cells). Thus striate and prestriate cortex of the monkey contains four subsets of binocular cells which may contribute to depth perception.
Activity from single neurons in the visual cortex of anaesthetized and paralyzed cats were recorded in response to monocular and binocular stimuli of different retinal disparities. Three different types of disparity sensitive neurons were found, characterized by (1) a response maximum near zero disparity, (2) a response minimum near zero disparity, and (3) an asymmetric disparity sensitivity. Usually, neurons of the first type receive about the same monocular input from the two eyes; the other disparity sensitive neurons respond better to monocular stimulation of one eye as compared to the other. The results closely resemble those obtained recently in the rhesus monkey.

Plasma clearance rates and dialysance of labelled cortisol were measured in patients on chronic intermittent dialysis during and after dialysis. Plasma clearance rates during dialysis were 30--63% higher than after dialysis; dialysance was 0.3--0.7 1/h and accounted only for 20--35% of the increase of plasma clearance rates during dialysis. After bolus injection of labelled cortisol, disappearance curves were obtained in two normal subjects and two uraemic subjects on and off dialysis. Biological halftimes of the different segments of the disappearance curves and distribution volumes were calculated. The size of the inner compartment (V1) is greater in uraemia. The disappearance curves flatten after the end of dialysis, indicating an increase of biological halftime after dialysis. Plasma 17-OHCS-glucuronides dropped from 2.13 +/- 0.62 micromol/l (n = 20) at the beginning to 1.05 +/- 0.65 micromol/l at the end of dialysis and increased to 1.51 +/- 0.43 micromol/l (n = 12) within 3 h thereafter. During dialysis cortisol metabolites are removed from the blood. This may decrease inhibition of cortisol metabolism by the end products of cortisol metabolism which might explain the more rapid plasma clearance and the shortened cortisol half-life during haemodialysis.
Simultaneous flow cytometric DNA and volume analysis of normal rat bone marrow cells shows three populations of nucleated cells with different mean volume. Each of these populations proliferates in a distinct cell cycle (alpha, beta, gamma). Normally the alpha-cell cycle has the highest amplitude, the beta-cell cycle is intermediate, and the gamma-cell cycle is low. The alpha-cell cycle was very significantly depressed and the beta + gamma-cell cycle was increased in three different rat leukemias (L5222, Shay, BNML), growing on three different rat strains (BDIX, Holtzmann, Brown Norway). The two parameter analysis further revealed that cells of the beta + gamma-cell cycle were slightly hyperdiploid and hypertetraploid in leukemic animals. The decrease of the alpha-cell cycle and the hyperploidies were more sensitive indicators for the abnormal proliferation pattern than the analysis of one parameter DNA distributions which remained within normal limits in all three leukemias.
Accumulation of clavicular fractures among newborns on the authors' ward is reported, with reference to 1978. Twenty clavicular fractures were recorded from 1.6 per cent of all newborns, in the above period under review. They were related to cephalic presentations and to the upper shoulder in 90 percent. They were closely correlated to high birth weight. Positioning of the women concerned and medical supervision of delivery seemed to be of causative importance.
In this article the possible relationship between gold therapy of a chronic seronegative polyarthritis and the appearance of a cerebro-organic syndrome in a 56-year-old postmenopausal woman will be discussed. We take into consideration the basic illness, the biography, the hormonal situation, the simultaneous chloroquin therapy and the overdosage of the gold drug. After a careful consideration of the different diagnostical possibilities following the above mentioned factors, not only a temporal but also a causative relationship of gold therapy and cerebro-organic syndrome seems to be possible.
A typical case of Poland syndrome is reported; brachiothoracic hemi-aplasia with absence of major pectoralis muscle, shortening of the arm and symbrachydactylia. Additionally, there was some evidence of debility. There were no malformations in the family history.
