The difficulties in diagnosing pleural mesothelioma, both clinically and histopathologically, are documented by our experiences with this rare tumour during an 18-year-period. A rising incidence of pleural mesothelioma is reported in the literature, which is suspected to be caused by the increasing use of asbestos. This increase is not represented in a non-industrialized area. The heterogenous treatment reported in cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma illustrates the poor results achieved hitherto. Now treatment with either combination chemotherapy or radioactive drugs is recommended.
A 61-year-old male patient, with a burned-out ankylosing spondylitis, developed polyarteritis in the right lower limb, associated with periosteal new bone formation in tibia and fibula. An acute exacerbation may have been precipitated by an infection with yersinia. HLA type: A 28, 26, B5, 27, Cwl.

Thrombosis of epicardial coronary veins was demonstrated in 16 of 50 cases of left ventricular acute myocardial infarction and/or recent coronary arterial thrombosis. All patients with valvular heart disease had venous thrombosis. In cases without valvular heart disease, venous thrombosis was seen in infarctions involving more than 30% of the left ventricular myocardial mass with a post-attack survival time of at least 24 hours. The veins thrombosed were in all cases those draining the infarcted myocardium. Coronary vein thrombosis seems not to be prevented by anticoagulant medication.

The commonly performed autopsy of the heart often fails to demonstrate a satisfactory clinicopathological correlation in cases of death due to ischemic heart disease. An autopsy protocol devised specifically for the study of hearts from patients succumbing to ischemic heart disease is presented. This protocol has been employed in a consecutive series of 63 patients with ischemic heart disease dying at the medical department B, Rigshospitalet in the period 1 September 1975 to 1 May 1976. It comprises a meticulous histological examination of the coronary arteries, including quantitation of luminal narrowing. The ventricular myocardium is sliced transversely, and the Nitro-BT test is applied to identify and delineate acute myocardial infarction, the extent of which is quantitated by pointcounting. In a search for histopathological changes responsible for conducting disturbances, the sinoatrial and the atrioventricular nodes are examined histologically.

The periodontal condition was evaluated according to the PI and the Periodontal Treatment Need System (PTNS) in a random sample of 35-year-old citizens of Oslo. The study demonstrated that periodontal disease was a major dental health problem despite the fact that 88.9% of the subjects visited a dentist regularly. No statistically significant differences were found in PI, PTNS and OHI-S values among the different sexes and educational groups. Although the majority of the subjects (77.8%) brushed their teeth more than once a day, the oral hygiene status was not satisfactory (mean OHI-S 1.56). The frequency of toothbrushing did not influence the mean PI scores. Dental hard and soft tissue lesions related to toothbrushing were found in 30.0 and 6.8% of the subjects respectively, and more often among persons brushing more than once a day than among persons brushing less frequently.
DMF teeth were recorded in a random sample of 117 35-year-old citizens of Oslo. The mean number of DMF teeth was 25.7, reflecting a high caries experience in the population surveyed. The mean number of decayed teeth was 5.1, the majority being due to recurrent carious lesions. Only 61.2% of the total number of posterior carious teeth were observed clinically. The remaining lesions (38.8%) were diagnosed on bitewing radiographs. The mean number of missing teeth in the sample was 6.3, while the mean number of filled teeth was 18.9. This indicates that the subjects have had acces to regular dental treatment. Females in the lower educational group had significantly more missing teeth and fewer filled teeth than females in the higher educational group. Similar differences could not be detected in males.

A case of intrabronchial hamartoma is reported. These are very rare tumours, generally accepted as being of developmental origin. Signs and symptoms may strikingly suggest bronchogenic carcinoma. Malignant changes in intrabronchial hamartomas have not been proven and treatment is surgical removal, if possible, with preservation of lung tissue distal to the tumour.

Orthopantomograms were taken of 111 subjects constituting a random sample of 35-year-old citizens of Oslo. The most frequent pathologic finding was marginal bone loss, which was found in seventy-one persons (64%). Fifty-one impacted and unerupted teeth in twenty-eight persons were seen, the third molars predominating. Ten retained roots were found in nine persons, and apical radiolucent areas were found on forty-four teeth in thirty-three persons. In addition to the pathologic findings, 101 endodontically treated teeth in fifty-five persons were observed.
