An outbreak of duck virus enteritis among ducks and geese in Denmark.

Duck virus enteritis occurred in the spring of 1982 among domesticated mallards, Pekin ducks and geese producing eggs for the same hatchery. Wild mallards may have introduced the infection to the domestic birds. High mortality occurred in one flock of Pekin ducks and in young geese. Mallards were also affected, but less severely. Gross and microscopic lesions were in general typical for DVE. Virus was demonstrated by electron microscopy of Bursa fabricii from experimentally infected ducklings. Neutralizing antibodies were found in serum from ducks, surviving an acute outbreak in the flock. Vaccination was performed and hygienic precautions taken, and transmission from infected flocks to progeny was negligible.

Ectopic production of the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotrophin by malignant ovarian neoplasms.

A sensitive and specific radio-immunoassay for the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotrophin (beta-HCG) was performed on serum samples from 18 patients with large pelvic masses. No beta-HCG was detectable in 8 patients with either benign ovarian tumours or non-ovarian masses Ten patients had a malignant ovarian neoplasm, and 6 of these (60%) had raised beta-HCG levels. Cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary was the commonest malignant tumour (6/10) and the beta-HCG level was raised in 4 patients (66.6%) with this tumor. Serum beta-HCG values therefore appear to be useful in the management of ovarian neoplasms, both for the early diagnosis of occult tumor and for monitoring response to treatment.

Termination of mid-trimester pregnancy with intramuscular 15-(S)-15-,methyl-prostaglandin F2 alpha.

Termination of mid-trimester pregnancy was successfully achieved in 30 patients with 15-(S)-15-methyl-PGF 2 alpha administered by repeated intramuscular injections. All patients aborted within 48 hours and the majority (73%) aborted within 24 hours. The mean induction-abortion interval was 19 affected by parity but was marginally shorter in patients at an earlier stage of gestation. The average total dosage of 15-methyl-PGF 2 alpha was 2075 micrograms (or 8,3 injections) per patient. Vomiting (93,9%) and diarrhoea (73,3%) were the only troublesome side-effects but they were not severe and were well tolerated by the patients. The incidence of vomiting was reduced with prophylactic drugs.

Intramuscular and extra-amniotic 15-(S)-15-methyl-prostaglandin F2 alpha in intra-uterine death.

The efficacy of 15-(S)-15-methyl-PGF2 alpha in inducing labour in 30 patients with intra-uterine fetal death was tested. The patients were divided into two groups of 15 patients and the drug was administered either by repeated intramuscular injection or by continuous intra-uterine extra-amniotic infusion. The extra-amniotic method of administration was the safest and most successful method (100% v. 93,3%); the duration of labour was shorter (mean 12 hours 39 minutes v. 17 hours 39 minutes); less prostaglandin was required (mean 867 micrograms v. 2300 micrograms); and it was associated with the lowest incidence of side-effects compared with the intramuscular route of administration (no vomiting; 6,6% incidence of diarrhoea v. 60% vomiting and 73,3% diarrhoea). The intramuscular method was further complicated by 1 case of uterine rupture.

Missed abortion treated with intramuscular 15-(S)-15-methyl-prostaglandin F2 alpha.

Repeated intramuscular injections of 15-(S)-15-methyl-PGF2 alpha were administered to 15 patients with a missed abortion. Fourteen (93,3%) aborted within 24 hours, with a mean induction abortion interval of 10 hours 54 minutes. The single failure occurred in a patient with a placenta accreta. The induction abortion interval was marginally shorter in patients at an early stage of gestation and was not affected by parity or the duration of fetal death. The average total dosage of 15-methyl-PGF2 alpha was 1250 micrograms (or 5 injections) per patient. The side-effects consisted of vomiting (71%), diarrhoea (71%), leucocytosis (64,3%) and transient pyrexia (21,5%), but these were not severe and were well tolerated by the patients.

Electron microscopic studies of bovine viral diarrhea virus in tissues of diseased calves and in cell cultures.

Pathomorphological studies by electron microscopy (EM) were carried out on the intestines and lymphoid tissues, the buffy coat cells and cultured lymphocytes from calves suffering from mucosal disease (MD). This led to the detection of particles, 45--55 nm in diameter, within characteristic vesicular structures. As these findings coincided with the isolation of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) from the same tissues and demonstration of BVDV-antigen by immunocytochemical techniques in corresponding samples, the particles were tentatively identified as the BVDV. A detailed study of in vitro infected bovine cell cultures corroborated this supposition and contributed to a conjectural evaluation of the viral morphogenesis. It revealed a difference from the morphogenesis of most other togaviruses, as the presumed virions were assembled within smooth-membraned vesicles, formed during the infection. Thus, in the material examined, a budding process was not involved in the development of BVDV.

The relationship between bone density, mineral content, and mechanical strength in the femoral neck.

The bone density, mineral content and average shear stress in bending at failure were measured in vitro in 33 femoral necks of women and men of different ages. The correlations between these three parameters as well as their correlation with the Singh index were carefully analyzed and found to show that the Singh index is of no clinical value. The best correlation exists between bone density and shear stress at failure. Practically no correlation is found between the breaking stress and Singh index. The breaking stress decreases with age much faster than the bone density or bone mineral content. The correlation between the work to fracture and the bone density or its mineral content is only moderate. The bone density is best indicator for the compressive bone strength. The changes of bone strength are apparently influenced by factors other than the bone density and mineral content, although the possibility that small changes in bone density or mineral content cause large changes in bone strength cannot be excluded.

Light- and electron-microscope differentiation of axons containing vasopressin and oxytocin in the neurohypophyseal lobe of the rat.

In neural lobes of Sprague-Dawley rats fixed with glutaraldehyde but without osmication, toluidine blue staining of semi-thin sections revealed two clear axon types: type I, highly stained, and type II, slightly stained. After uranyl acetate and lead citrate impregnation of adjacent ultrathin sections, electron microscopy showed that type I axons contained electron-dense granules whereas type II axons mostly contained pale granules. When adjacent semi-thin sections were stained with toluidine blue or treated for immunocytochemistry, type I axons were found to react with vasopressin antisera, and type II axons with oxytocin antisera. In neural lobes of Brattleboro rats, only type II axons were observed and contained pale granules. Both in light and electron microscopy, glutaraldehyde fixation without osmication, therefore provided a simple and reliable approach to distinguish between neurohypophyseal axons containing vasopressin and oxytocin, respectively.

A comparison of meptazinol and pethidine for pain relief during the first stage of labour.

Meptazinol and pethidine were compared in a double-blind randomized trial with regard to analgesia during the first stage of labour. It was concluded that neither drug is effective for sustained pain relief, and that there is no advantage of one over the other. However, neither drug affected maternal condition as reflected by respiratory rate, pulse rate and blood pressure, nor was any detrimental effect noted on the condition of the newborn infant. The critical reassessment of traditional drugs for analgesia in labour is suggested.

Lack of intracellular degradation of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis by bovine macrophages infected in vitro and in vivo: light microscopic and electron microscopic observations.

Blood-derived macrophages from clinically healthy cows and cows infected with Mycobacterium paratuberculosis were cultured in vitro and inoculated with heat-killed M paratuberculosis. Five weeks after infection, acid-fast bacteria continued to be demonstrated in the macrophages. Macrophage cultures also were infected with living M paratuberculosis and were examined by electron microscopy. Four weeks after infection, intact bacteria were found in all cultures. Electron microscopic examinations of intestinal macrophages from infected cows also demonstrated intracellular intact bacteria.
