Hyaline bodies of odontogenic cysts: histological, histochemical and electron microscopic studies.

Hyaline bodies of odontogenic cyst were examined by histological, histochemical and electron microscopic observations. They were seen only in odontogenic cysts and their prevalence was 6.9% in 576 cases of the cysts. They occurred most frequently within the epithelial lining, but a few bodies were observed in the connective tissue walls. Histochemical reactions of hyaline bodies were similar to those of dental cuticles, but differed from keratin. Ultrastructurally, hyaline bodies were typed into two forms: lamellated and homogeneous. The lamellated bodies were composed of alternate electron-dense and electron-lucent layers. The homogeneous bodies were occasionally formed around granular material, mineralized masses and cholesterol clefts. Hyaline bodies adjoined epithelial cells via a basal lamina-like structure and half-desmosomes. Epithelial cells containing well-developed, rough surfaced, endoplasmic reticulum were seen adjacent to hyaline bodies. Ferritin-like granules were found in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells near hyaline bodies. By electron probe X-ray microanalysis, inorganic elements within the ferritin-like granules were the same in constitution as those in the outermost electron-dense layer of the lamellated bodies. By scanning electron microscopy, hyaline bodies displayed ellipsoidal and stick-like shapes. The present study suggested that hyaline bodies are particular products formed by odontogenic epithelium.

The effect of chloramphenicol and thiamphenicol on the ultrastructure of the erythroblasts in mouse splenic colonies.

Lethally irradiated mice were injected with 1 x 10(5) normal bone marrow cells taken from mice of the same strain. They were divided into two groups: One was given chloramphenicol (CAP) or thiamphenicol (TAP) in an early stage after marrow transfusion and the other in a later stage. In both groups, more prominently in the former group, some ultrastructural changes were recognized in mitochondria of the early erythroblasts. Mitochondria increased in number and became swollen with electron lucent matrix and paucity of cristae. Condensed mitochondria described in earlier reports were never observed. Intermediate or late erythroblasts seen only in the latter group did not show such alterations. Mitochondrial changes in the early erythroblasts were considered to reflect the dose-related toxic effects of CAP and TAP, and it is assumed that these drugs affect the development of erythroblasts in a very early stage.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor: histochemical and electron microscopic observations on a case.

A case of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor was studied histochemically and electron microscopically. This case was characterized by an abundant amount of homogeneous substance and the presence of numerous clear cells. Although the homogeneous substance was shown to be an amyloid material in nature, it was supposed to be an extracellular product of the epithelial tumor cells. The clear cells contained abundant glycogen granules in their cytoplasm.

Partition behaviour of a cultured mouse mammary cancer cell line in aqueous two-phase polymer systems.

Cell surface-associated changes in behaviour of cultured cells on partition in an aqueous two-phase polymer system were studied using FM3A cell line (a cultured mammary cancer of mouse) with respect to aging. The aqueous polymer system consisted of dextran, polyethyleneglycol and sodium phosphate, equilibrated at 6 degrees C to separate into two phases. Enzyme treatment of cells with neuraminidase reduced cell electrophoretic mobility, as well as the cell partition ratio. Hyaluronidase produced no observable effects on partition and cell electrophoretic mobility, suggesting that the partition is related to culture time was similar for both cell electrophoretic mobility and cell partition, showing a rise and fall of charge-associated cell surface change during cell growth, the maxium occurring at the beginning of exponential growth. This change was reflected in the pattern of countercurrent distribution of the cells in respective stages of growth. Countercurrent distribution with our two-phase system is expected to be capable of fractionating cell populations according to cell surface properties.
