[Detection of alcohol-related problems in primary care].

The results of a survey of primary health care physicians in order to know which factors are associated with the efficacy in the detection and treatment of patients with alcohol-related problems are analyzed in this article. The number of diagnosed patients is related with previous formal education on alcohol-related problems of primary health care physicians. Primary health care physicians are very interested in this issue, but they don't feel satisfied nor gratified with their work with this type of patients. Gratifying feelings are directly related to previous formal education, and those who feel gratified diagnose more patients. Needs for formal education must be accompanied by profound organizational changes in the coordination of actions between primary health care, specialized services and social care.

[Hormones used as ergogenics: present state of the question].

Sporting competition in our society has become the spectacle that mobilises and brings together the greatest number of people throughout the world, with the corresponding cultural and economic influence that this implies. As a result, the desire for athletic prowess has led sportspersons to undergo intense training programs and to consume substances that improve their performance, at times having recourse to doping techniques. At present, doping is the result of a combination of social, individual, physiological and cultural factors, which affect not only professional, but also amateur sportspeople. In order for the control and eradication of doping to be efficient, it is necessary to understand the problem and the substances that are most employed, amongst which special mention is merited by hormonal substances due to the complexity of detecting them and their possible repercussions on health.

Effect of psychotropic drugs on histamine H2-receptors in rat isolated uterus.

The effects of the monoamine oxidase inhibitors iproniazid, nialamide and phenelzine, the neuroleptics haloperidol and thioridazine, and the benzodiazepines diazepam and clonazepam on histamine H2-receptors were assessed on rat isolated uterus. The monoamine oxidase inhibitors showed a slight non-competitive antihistamine H2 activity, while diazepam and clonazepam were devoid of any action. Haloperidol and thioridazine inhibited in a dose-dependent manner the tonic component of KCl induced contraction, while thioridazine under the same conditions exhibited a slight antihistamine H2 activity. These data show that the drugs tested are devoid of or elicited only a slight antihistamine H2 activity at high non-therapeutic concentrations.

[Utility of beta-blockers in the treatment of chronic heart failure].

Heart failure has become a major public health problem. About 2-3% of people over 65 years suffer from Heart Failure. A huge amount of money is spent every year treating problems connected with this syndrome. In this paper we analyse randomised prospective trials which support the use of beta-blockers in these patients. We also analyse the benefits of this treatment and some special considerations concerning the use of these drugs.
