[Non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma. Retrospective study of 64 cases classified according to Kiel's and Rappaport's nomenclature].

64 cases of non-Hodgkin malignant lymphomas were the object of a retrospective study: these 64 cases were considered in terms of Kiel's and Rappaport's classifications. The stimultaneous study using the two classifications showed that entities defined in one of them do not correspond to entities defined in the other one. --This study allows us to define: 1) in Kiel's classification, a groupe of lymphomas of favorable prognosis, by opposition with a group of lymphomas of poor progonosis, all stages included; 2) in Rappaport's classification, a group of nodular lymphomas of favorable prognosis, for which the actuarial survival curves, all stages included, seem to accord with the anatomico-clinical data thus far published. Nevertheless, while nodular lymphomas can be identified as lymphomas of favorable prognosis, it does not seem possible to isolate, in Rappaport's classification, a group of lymphomas of poor prognosis by opposition with the favorable prognosis group. This study confirms that, to the morphological entity of the malignant centroblastic centrocytic follicular lymphoma, there corresponds a lymphoma of favorable prognosis whose median is 72 months, all stages included, for an average age of 57.5 years (this median is more than 180 months in the clinically localized stages). This morphological entity of Kiel covers 76 per cent of Rappaport's malignant nodular lymphomas. Nevertheless, 24 per cent of these same malignant nodular lymphomas are considered to be lymphomas of poor prognosis by Kiel and seem to appear as such in our study.

Pharmacokinetic data processed by microcomputer for the formulation of optimal drug dosage form.

Microcomputers have been used in pharmacokinetics for several years, but their use in the area of formulation is a new application. By using appropriate data on the drug, the dosage form required and its mechanism of absorption and clearance, microcomputers can systematize and speed-up formulation, simplify manufacturing processes and, through simulated models and plasma level predictions, reduce the number of bioavailability studies needed.

Measurement of DNA single-strand breaks in gill and hemolymph cells of mussels, Mytilus sp., collected on the French Atlantic Coast.

DNA single-strand breaks were measured by the comet assay in both gill and hemolymph cells of mussels collected in 3 sampling areas of the French coast (Pointe du Castelli, Pen Bron and Saint-Nazaire Harbour). Whole mussel tissue samples were also collected for the chemical determination of PAH, PCB and heavy metal concentrations. In mussel, a higher level of DNA strand breaks was measured in gill than in hemolymph cells (p < 0.01). Despite a factor of contamination from 2 to 3 between sites, no difference in the extent of mussel DNA strand breaks was shown between sampling locations (p > 0.05), questioning the sensitivity of the assays used in biomonitoring studies.

Genetic responses to metal contamination in two clams: Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum.

Coastal ecosystems are subjected to a wide variety of disturbances, including those due to xenobiotics of agricultural and industrial origin. These pollutants as heavy metals can modify the genetic diversity of populations by favouring or counter-selecting certain alleles or genotypes by differential mortality. In the present study, two genetic markers (phosphoglucomutase and glucosephosphate isomerase) and a protein marker (metallothionein) were monitored in order to determine the impact of heavy metals in different clam populations. Analysis of the genetic structure of the clam populations examined reveals that those inhabiting environments contaminated by heavy metals exhibit a higher allelic diversity and possess alleles at PGM loci that could be selected by the presence of heavy metals. The evaluation of metallothionein levels using a specific polyclonal antibody developed in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) demonstrated the existence of a relationship between metallothionein concentrations and the level of metal pollution for clam populations sampled from different sites. An inter-specific difference was also detected between Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum living in sympatry at the same site, suggesting a differential response of these two species upon exposure to an identical heavy metal concentration.
